EDIT - This is my 50th opinion! I didn't notice until now, -I thought I'd just mention it (lol) it's not related to the film at all.
I'd heard lots of good things about How To Lose A Guy In Ten Days, and it seemed like something I'd like, so I dragged my friend to the Trafford Centre with me this afternoon to watch it.
--- Andie Anderson is a talented writer for Composure magazine, but she is held back by her demanding editor. She writes a monthly 'How To' column each month, which is unchallenging and boring.
Her friend gets dumped, after making a series of mistakes, and Andie realises she's onto an article. She decides to write a piece about the classic mistakes that women make that lead to them being dumped. Her editor entitles this, 'How To Lose A Guy In Ten Day's. She has to find a guy, and then drive him away in ten days.
Meanwhile, Ben Barry is a womanising advertising executive. He's tired of advertising typical male things, and wants to be in charge of a lucrative diamond contract. The two bitchy female executives working
on the contract don't think he's in touch with women at all, and refuse. He persists, and they eventually relent, on the condition that he can make a woman, any woman, fall in love with him in you guessed it, ten days.
They choose Andie as his target, as they know about the article she is currently writing. At first, he is impressed by her smart, sassy attitude, but it soon turns to horror as she morphs into a psychotic bunny boiler who names his, ahem, member, Princess Sofia. He has no idea how Andie, the determined career woman could change so much, but he cannot dump her, as he has to stick it out for the full ten days to get his contract.
The deadline is looming, and it seems like Ben just won't dump Andie, and she becomes even worse in her attempt to be dumped within the ten-day deadline. Will either find out about each other's intentions, or will true love blossom? ---
This is definitely a cut above the average romantic comedy. It's a light-hearted film with a simple premise, and a good way to pass the time!
You find yourself cringing and covering your eyes with your hands as Andie becomes even worse in her behaviour. Visiting a supposed couples therapist, computer-generating a family photo-album, buying him a 'love-fern' to represent their love and making friends with his mother behind his back are just a few of the embarrassing things she does in her attempt to be dumped.
Of course, we all make these mistakes, but perhaps as not exaggerated as Andie! It's extremely entertaining, if a little mindless, but embarrassing as you recognise these situations - have you ever added your own touch to your boyfriend's flat, or tried to discreetly match your outfits?
Kate Hudson is a great actress, and shouldn't just be known as Goldie Hawn's daughter as she's talented in her own right. This is a difficult role for anyone, as she has to be likeable and extremely irritating at the same time, but she seems very natural within the role, and not at all cheesy or annoying. Matthew is also good, and there is a scene where he takes his shirt off which should keep the girls happy, but personally, for me, he's too muscly! The two have reasonably good chemistry, but it's not exactly sizzling.
This is something to watch then you're bored and have nothing else to do. It is quite enjoyable and frothy, but ultimately, unmemorable and not a classic. The plot is extremely predictable from start to finish, and the characters are stereotypical, and have been done a million times before in other films!
This doesn't stop it being a good film though. The excellent acting makes this a cut above the rest, and you might be put off by the fact it's a chick-flick, but it's an enjoyable one and doesn't delve too deep into the female psyche to be scary!
This is an excellent film to switch off from your real life and enjoy an hour and three quarters of mindless, frothy romance, but if you love challenging, dramatic films full of twists and turns, then this isn't for you.
It's not going to make any impact on your life and it'll be forgotten in five years time, but it really is enjoyable! Don't stick your nose up at it until you actually watch it.
It is rated 12A, and runs for approximately 1 hour and 45 minutes.
