How to Lose a Guy in Ten Days is available for general release from Friday 18th April. We managed to secure some advance tickets from bbc.co.uk, valid for last night.
The leading characters are played by Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey. Kate is the now gorgeous “famous in her own right” daughter of Goldie Hawn. She is not yet 24 and has won a Golden Globe for her acting talent in “Almost Famous” (2000).
Matthew, at 34, has been on our screens a little longer, and previously starred in “A Time to Kill”, “The Wedding Planner” and “Return of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre”.
Kate plays the part of Andie Anderson, a single Journalism Masters graduate, who is working on the chick-magazine Composure. Her boss is quite demanding and will not allow her to right about topics she really wants to write about, such as politics and the environment. Instead she needs to prove herself with her column “How to….” With Andie Anderson.
Matthew plays Ben Barry, who works as an executive in an advertising agency, with a reputation for being a ladies man, and has never really had a long standing relationship
(over a few days!!).
Andie’s desire to write about more meaningful topics means that at a regular magazine meeting, she has nothing to contribute for the next addition, which goes to print in 11 days. Her colleague, seems to lurch from one romance disaster to another, and once again she finds she is dumped by her new man. Andie dreams up the idea of writing the column based on the mistakes women make when dating a new man, and the title “How to lose a Guy in Ten Days” is born. But first she must hook a date..
Ben has career goals of his own. He wants to move away from the products he is involved with, and install himself as the lead executive on the lucrative diamond advertising campaign, with the family that control 70% of the world’s diamond sales. The two female executives who are already responsible for the campaign do not believe he understands the needs and desires of the diamond buying public. A challenge is laid down, whereby he must date a girl for the next ten days and bring her to the huge launch party. However, the girl in question is picked by the two female executives, who, due to a meeting at Composure earlier that day, already know that Andie has her own agenda for dating a man.
Andie and Ben get together for the first time that night, and what follows is at times a hilariously funny account of their relationship. Ben’s first impression of Andie is as a strong smart career woman with a sense of adventure and a love of sport. But within days, she starts to change her behaviour as her goal is for him to dump her within the ten days due to the many dating mistakes she makes.
Ben of course, finds her behaviour weirder and weirder and cannot understand what has happened to the woman he was so attracted to at the start. However, he cannot just dump her, as he would ordinarily want to, because he has a bet of his own, and the diamond contract is dependent on it. But maybe True Love will blossom despite the cringey behaviour and goings on?
The showdown is going to be the launch party for the Diamond merchants, which Andie is invited to by Ben, along with senior executives from both their organisations.
Will Ben manage to convince his boss that he has managed to get Andie to fall in love with him? Or will Andie realise that she has been set up, despite the fact that she is only dating Ben in the first place to meet her own career goals.
Both lead characters have their colleagues at their respective offices to depend on, and the scenes between the girls at composure or the boys at the advertising office are witty and fun to watch.
Running Time 116 minutes. The film is classified as a 12A.
I found this film enjoyable and worth a night out, although it is never going to be a classic film. I probably wouldn’t have bothered going to see it if I didn’t have some preview tickets, and in particular I didn’t think it would be something that my hubby would enjoy, as it seemed a bit too chick flick for him. On the contrary, he found it funny and very watchable too, as the movie explored the female psyche. It is very lighthearted, easy to follow, relaxing and stupendously funny and their behaviour unbelievably cringy at times. Worth watching if you fancy a night out with the girls, or with your partner providing you think he will enjoy a deeper insight into the female mind!
