I have only just recently started watching this show, despite the fact it was released in 2005. E4 must have decided to re-run the first series again so they've been advertising quite a lot lately.
Each episode is half an hour long, and is set in 2030, beginning with two teenagers sitting on a sofa, and the voiceover of a middle-aged sounding man who is their father explaining, in short terms, 'How I Met Your Mother'. This introduction lasts about a minute, until it goes into a flashback and we see this father, but in modern day times, before he ever had children.
The protagonist of the show is Ted, who is the voiceover/father guy at the beginning. The show mainly focuses on his life... his relationships, his social activities, and his friends.
We are introduced to Ted's friends straightaway: Marshall (Ted's easygoing best friend from college) and Marshall's girlfriend, Lily (you'll recognised her from American Pie and Buffy), and Barney, who is obsessed with women and one night stands. Ted is a nice guy, hopelessly romantic (we see him telling a
girl he loves her on their first date), and looking for the perfect woman. In the first episode, Ted's friends Lily and Marshall get engaged, which spurs on his desire to find his woman to settle down with even more.
The whole idea behind the show is that Ted is explaining how he met the women who eventually turns out to be his wife and the mother of his children, but it takes a while to get to that stage. We get hints, and Ted has a serious relationship with a girl named Robin, but we are then told she is not the one. Later on, Robin does become friends with the group though.
I've read other reviews of this show and completely agree that it is quite similar to Friends, and perhaps considered a bit of a replacement considering the last episode of Friends ended one year before this show came out. It isn't the funniest show ever, but it's got the same qualities as Friends and the dynamics of the characters both make you chuckle yet warm your heart at the same time. Both shows display different types of relationship issues, and I don't want to give any spoilers in case you've never seen How I Met Your Mother (HIMYW), but there are both happy and sad times. And after both different situations, their friends are always there to pick them up again, showing realistic friendships that one could relate to.
As I've already mentioned, the actress who plays Lily is recognisable from Buffy and American Pie, so she was already a star before entering this show. She plays Marshall's girlfriend, who's sweet, gives advice to her friends, is supportive, but also shows a fiesty side.
Marshall is played by Jason Segal. At the time HIMYM came out, Jason was fairly unknown, having only had small roles in American TV shows. Since then, he's starred in films such as Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You, Man, so clearly this show has done lots for him. He plays a sweet, lovable character, who is head over heels in love with Lily, but is always there for his friends. He's a bit of a loser, but it's just about acceptable!
The other friend Barney is played by Neil Patrick Harris. I had never heard/seen him before this show, but I think he's had quite a few roles in American TV shows and films, though nothing that is famous over in the UK (correct if I'm wrong someone!). His character is a bit of a womanizer who likes to boast about all the incredible girlfriends he has had (most of them are lies!), though is a softy at heart. He's a bit of a joker and always tends to come out with funny, catchy lines, like "Suit up!" when trying to get his friends to dress smarter.
There have been several more seasons of the show, though I've only seen series one for now. I am really looking forward to the next series as I'm truly hooked on this funny comedy now.
I think the idea of the show is quite good, of how an older Ted is explaining to his kids about how he met their mum. Though this is only a tiny portion (a couple of minutes) of the show at the very beginning of each episode and at the end, it gives the show a purpose, and reminds us of what we're learning (as if we're the teenagers!).
The characters are funny, likeable, and realistic, and that is probably what makes the show so comforting to watch.
