How I Met Your Mother is an American sitcom which premiered in 2005 but I've only just got around to watching it recently.
In the year 2030, Ted Mosby tells his son and daughter how he met and fell in love with their mother. The majority of the show is flashbacks to the present day showing the story of Ted's younger life when he is 27 years old, which is narrated in parts by Bob Saget. His younger days incorporates all the usual shenanigans of a young guy including dating, making a career, and going out with friends and much more information than any parent would usually tell their children. Marshall, Lily and Barney are some of Ted's very close friends and Marshall and Lily's engagement in the very first episode encourages Ted to go out and find his dream girl.
Nothing about Ted's wife and the future mother of his children is mentioned so we don't know who he is going to end up with. It could be Robin, who Ted meets and falls for in the first episode, who then becomes a friend in the already close group.
There are some great actors in this including the well-known Alyson Hannigan from Buffy the Vampire Slayer and American Pie ("this one time at bandcamp") and Jason Segel from Forgetting Sarah Marshall and I Love You Man. All of the actors work very well together in creating a realistic group of friends, each one with their own comical personality traits.
Ted (Josh Radnor) is every woman's dream man. He's kind, generous, polite, charming and most of all, his goal in life is to get married and be the perfect husband and father. The only problem is that he isn't the most confident in actually meeting potential future wives in the first place.
Marshall (Jason Segel) has been Ted's best friend since university and he is the confident and funny one of the pair. Ted has a love for humanitarianism and saving the world but he has to put this aside in order to provide for Lily, the love of his life.
Lily (Alyson Hannigan) is Marshall's kind-hearted and caring fiancé and the person who everyone turns to for advice. She is a kindergarten teacher and loves art.
Robin (Cobie Smulders) is a quirky ambitious news anchor. Ted had feelings for Robin from the moment he met her but Robin's feelings for him seem to go back and forth.
Barney (Neil Patrick Harris) is a successful lawyer and serial philanderer. He is obsessed with women and his charming and flirtatious ways often make him a great source of advice for Ted.
How I Met Your Mother is supposed to act as a kind of replacement to Friends which ended a year before this premiered. It does have a similar kind of feel to it with a close-knit group of friends who spend a lot of their time in MacLaren's, their favourite and local bar in New York. I'm sure most fans of Friends will enjoy this but it is nowhere near as good. There are many funny moments but some of these fall flat and I just can't compare the amount of comedy to Friends as I found that hilarious.
This is an enjoyable comedy sitcom though and I've started watching it most nights on E4. It's one of those programmes that I'll watch if there's nothing else on TV but I won't go out of my way to watch it and I'm not at all bothered if I miss it. Other than that though, How I Met Your Mother is a funny and fresh show and it somewhat fills the void since Friends ended.
There are five seasons at the moment and the first series is currently being shown on E4 which you can catch on weeknights at 7.30.
