Before we purchased a seperate DVD player, my boyfriend had installed a DVD re-writer into his computer, and connected it to the TV in our bedroom because I refused to watch any films on his 15" monitor!
He brought a selection of films on DVD, including "House on Haunted Hill" which is a remake of William Castle's 1958 classic horror tale. As a child I vaguely remember my parents watching it. It tells the story of an old house that used to be a lunatic asylum run by some mad doctors that did horrible experiments on the inmates. The inmates revolted and got revenge on the doctors, but not before one of the doctors pulled a switch, locking them all in, and they ended up being burnt alive.
Years later, a wealthy man arranges a party for his wife's birthday in this old house. He also lays on some special effects as his wealth has come about by him creating special effect theme rides. The guests know nothing about his hidden suprises. The guests arrive, but they are not the guests that he had invited! Somebody else had sent these individuals an invitation. He tells them that if they spend the night in the house he will give them one million dollars, and if anyone diesm their share will be divided amongst whoever is left.
As with all creepy films, no matter how much you do not want the actors to go wandering off on their own you can be assured they do!! Very predicatable. The film effects are very good, but have been done before in other films. It soon dawns on the guests that their host is not responsible for the happenings in the house and that it may have something to do with what happened there years before.
I wouldn't put this film in my top horror list, and I'm glad that it was not me that paid for it, but the DVD does have some great extra's. You can compare some scenes from the first film, see deleted scenes, a challenge game, famous remakes and much more.
Did anyone survive? I'm not going to spoil it, you will have to see it.
If you are a DVD collector the price is not bad at £13.99 but I'd rent it on video first to make sure it's up to your expectations. I wouldn't watch it again, my boyfriend wouldn't either. He asked me to put it up for auction in ebay.
