A mish-mash of horror styles combining both the preposterous storyline and feel of the 1950’s original with modern day CGI effects and 'Over the top' blood and gore. The result may please some, but true horror fans will be disappointed with the lack of true suspenseful situations and the substitution of gore for real terror. The story is a simple, a group of strangers are offered $1,000,000 each to stay overnight in a haunted house. Of course, the house is 'Alive' and on this occasion it appears to bear a grudge against everyone within. The similarities to the recent 'Haunting' re-make are more than passing. There is evidence of a big budget, the sets are stupendous, the special effects are well produced and the sound staging is fabulous. This all makes for a spectacular DVD. If you have seen the film and think it stands repeated viewing then the DVD is a shining example of what a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack can do. The big, low frequency bass throughout the film will have far greater impact via the quality home cinema set-up than it would on the big screen. Anamorphic Widescreen and ample extra features add to a good value DVD. Shaun (Oatmeal)
