***Why did I watch House of Wax***
As an avid horror fan I do try to watch any new horror films that have been released. If the film looks really good then I head the girls to watch it, if it looks fairly average I will wait to hire a copy. Unfortunately my partner does not share my enthusiasm!
I actually missed watching this film at the cinema so I rented a copy.
***Cast****
Elisha Cuthbert as Carly Jones (24, The Girl Next Door) Chad Michael Murray as Nick Jones ((One Tree Hill, Gillmore Girls) Jared Padalecki as Wade (Supernatural, Friday the 13th) Paris Hilton as Paige Edwards (The Simple Life, Paris Hilton's My New BFF)
***The plot***
House of Wax is remake of a 1953 film that goes by the same name.
While the opening credits roll we get to see a brief scene where a couple are forced to put their child into its highchair after the father brings the fighting and screaming child into the room. As the child continues to have a uncontrollable tantrum the child is strapped it its highchair the mother gives the child a good slap and asks the question 'why
can't he be more like his brother?'
While all this is going on the other child is sat quietly eating its breakfast. Throughout the scene we do not see the children's faces and has the effect that it has been set a number of years ago.
The film starts of in the current times with a group of 6 friends travelling to watch a sports event in the city. The lead characters in the film are Carly and her twin brother Nick who most of the film is centred around.
Carly is joined by her Wade, her friend Paige and boyfriend Blake. Nicks arrival is a surprise to Carly as it is Blake who has in fact invited Nick and his best friend Dalton.
At the beginning of the film it comes to light that Carly is seen as the 'good' twin whilst 'Nick' is seen as the bad twin by everyone for constantly getting into trouble and breaking the rules.
As the group are travelling overnight they get a little stuck when a short cut suggested by Blake is blocked, and they end up setting up camp in a film.
The group relax, play football, drink a few beers even though a terrible smell keeps wafting through their campsite. The fun and games however is interrupted by someone in a pickup truck who head directly for the campsite with their lights on full beam.
The group are shocked by this and try to find out who is in the car and what they want but nobody gets out of the pickup truck. This leads to delinquent Nick throwing a beer bottle at the car and smashing its headlight. The pickup truck reverses and leaves.
Most of the group are quite shaken but spend the night at the campsite anyway and in the morning they wake to find a dvd camera is missing from the camp and Wade's fan belt has been damaged on his car. Has this been done on purpose?
The group agree to separate while they still have another car. This leaves Carly and Wade head into the nearby town of Ambrose with the help of a scruffy local they meet to try to get a new fan belt, and the remaining group travel to the game and arrange to meet up later.
However after hitting heavy traffic they end up heading back to meet with Carly and Wade.
Once Carly and Wade get to the town of Ambrose they stumble around trying to find help as the local garage is closed and they head into the abandoned House of Wax. After a brief tour around they leave feeling a little uneasy after seeing some of the old wax work figures and thinking that she saw a strange figure lurking outside.
Thankfully they come across a mechanic named Bo who offers to help them. But as there friends head back to the campsite to wait for them, one by one the group realise the town of Ambrose is not what it seems!
***In my opinion***
I had never watched the original film so I thankfully had nothing to compare it to because I hate it when the original sets such high expectations because you know the new film is never going to live up to the original.
The cast where quite well known and did think Paris Hilton was going to be ridiculous but guess what, she was not!
In fact in my opinion all of the characters were well written, I actually felt like you got the chance to know them and in most cases like them. The acting was good and I was suprised at this because a lot of films tend to just throw in a few good looking actors and expect a hit, this is not the case with this film.
I thought the story was original and tge idea of a House of wax containing real people actually quite freaked me ... but that is why I like horror films!
The story picked up pace quite quickly and I think it offered quite a few edge of your seat moments straight from the start.
I really enjoyed the killing scenes which is probably quite sick but I thought they were good and made me jump I especialy flinched at the part with Wade and Paiges's death scene.
The ending was a bit predicatble but it was not boring or did it put me off the rest of the film. There were no twists and turns it was just a film based on pure pyschotic killer but was enough to keep me entertained.
I especially liked where the ending kept you guessing and made out that House of Wax 2 could be released (however to date it has not).
I liked this film so much I bought it on DVD. Dont get me wrong its not the scaryiest of worst bloodfest I have seen but it is throughly entertaining in my opinion.
