From my first viewing of this film, i was expecting something slightly different to what i witnessed. I have not watched the original of this, so this review should not take the path of, it will n ever be as good as the original. The purpose of this is to grasp a sense of what a viewer can expect from watching this film, without an original to compare and basically dismiss what is quite a good film.
I have watched this film 4 times now, and i still cringe and hide behind the pillow when watching parts. For the most part, it is an excellent film, and a very good watch, even if slightly predictable at times. I will not go to heavily into the plot as, quite personally i feel that it is far better to watch the film without knowing too much what is happening, but the beginning follows that a group of teenagers are going off to a football game, and take a break half way there to camp for the night. This is where the predictablilty factor comes in, as whenever you have a group of teenagers camping in some forest alone without permission, you just know something is going to happen... and going by the plot, one of the cars breaks down and requires a fan belt replacement. So the group split up, with four going in the car to the game and leaving the other two to go hunt for a fan belt in the nearby town, where according to a local "redneck", as the description of the film calls him, a fan belt can be purchased at a garage there. Upon entering the town, they notice that situated in it is "The House of Wax" that they had seen advertised on the road earlier on their journey, so with their curiosity on full they have a look around, even though its not open... hence the slight predictablity factor. But do not get me wrong, regardless of this, it is a well worth watch. This is the point where the film kicks off, and it starts to get good.
For the rest of the film, it follows the orginal slasher sequence with plenty of blood and gore. What makes it slightly different, and quite honestly much better, are that it goes just that extra bit to make it seem more real, getting you onto the edges of your seats, and saying, i know she wont get hurt it happens every tim.... OMG that is not meant to happen!!! These are the bits that cancel out the overall predictability.
To whom this film will appeal to would quite honestly be anyone except the major horror buffs who find teen slashers maybe a bit too predictable. While not quite on the same plane as something as say Scream, it certainly is much much better than the rest of them, and if its something you want to cringe at, then this film contains quite a few scenes that will cause you to look away, and its not even all that graphic!
The bonus features on the DVD are ok and contain:
Cast Commentary BRoll And Bloopers Video From Location Joel Silver Reveals House Of Wax Wax On The Design Of House Of Wax The House Built On Wax The Visual Effects Of House Of Wax Alternate Opening Jennifer Killed Gag Reel Theatrical Trailer
After watching the bonus features, id say they are all pretty average. For example, the bloopers video are ok and you get a small chuckle from time to time, but they aren't hilarious unfortunately, due to the lack of maturity of the actors, although again this is not me saying that their acting was poor in the film. Even Paris Hilton put on a good performance, but i did notice that she didn't exactly say a lot. Wether this was just her character, or she kept on forgetting them, we'll never know. The alternate opening though is one to watch defintetly and in my opinion should have been the actual start of the film. That is my only grumble, as to me it would have been a bit more memorable.
But in conclusion, id say it would be a good one to buy and keep for a cosey night it. Its not one you will get bored of unless you watch about 10 times in a row, and while not being a classic, its just one you want to keep on your shelf!
