legendary horror producers Joel Silver and Robert Zemeckis (Gothika, House on Haunted Hill). When their car breaks down on a trip, six college friends are sidetracked into an eerie backwoods town. Curiosity gets the better of them when they are intrigued by its macabre House of Wax. They soon find out that the town is not what it seems and they must find their way out before they fall victim to its ghoulishly inventive killers.
In the gleefully wicked performance which made the gothic master of the macabre. Vincent ... more
Price is Professor Harry Jarrod, a renowned wax sculptor plunged into insanity when an arsonist destroys his life's work. Unable to use his flame-scarred hands, he comes up with a new way of restocking his House of Wax. Aided by Igor (Charles Bronson), he dips his hapless victims in wax! Jarrod's new creations are widely praised, but a lone voice cries murder. When the dauntless Sue Allen discovers a wax figure strongly resembling a missing friend (Carolyn Jones, later immortalised as Morticia in The Adams Family), Jarrod decides to line up the very same fate for her! It's anyone's guess who will end up in the bubbling cauldron. But that doesn't lessen the sweat dread and sheer fun of this all-time classic.
Advantages: Actually entertaining if taken in the right spirit Disadvantages: Not terribly believable
...kept me occupied until the house of wax storyline. There is a good build up of atmosphere, partly because we don't quite know who is perpetrating the crimes, just that somewhere out there is a murderer. Then suddenly all hell lets loose and the action is pretty much non-stop until the end.
The only real flaw to this film for me is that it is not a particularly clever plot and it is easy to second-guess where the film is going. However, ... ...bad as I expected it. If you're looking for some mindless escapism for a couple of hours, then I don't think you can go far wrong with this - just bear in mind that it shouldn't be taken too seriously. Recommended.
A group of six friends are on their way to a football match. To break up the journey, they decide to camp overnight and get up early the next day. However, when one of the cars break down, Carly and boyfriend Wade are forced to accept a lift into the nearest town with a creepy-looking man. Relieved to get rid of him, they rush into town, only to find that no-one is around. They finally find someone to help them, and while waiting for him, pay a visit to the local wax museum. What they don't know is that under the wax, the exhibits were once alive, and the wax sculptor is after more bodies for his collection. Will the other four, including Carly's brother Nick, arrive in time to rescue them?
Elisha Cuthbert plays Carly. I haven't always been a fan of hers in the past: I didn't like her performance in Captivity at all. Here, though, she was much better, perhaps because she had a bit more to work with. Unlike her friend Paige, who is a bit of an airhead, Carly is sensible without being a prude, and is generally a lot more appealing as a character. I thought Elisha Cuthbert did a great job here. I found her very watchable and it was because of her that I found the film to be a lot more enthralling than I was expecting.
Chad Michael Murray of One Tree Hill fame plays Carly's brother, Nick. While Carly is undoubtedly the main character here, Nick does add a bit of interest to the film, not least because he is drawn as the bad boy of the group of friends, and clearly has difficulty in staying out of trouble. However, he really doesn't come into his own until towards the end of the film, which is when Murray gives his best performance. It isn't outstanding, but I think that he worked well within the parameters of the role, and he is very easy on the eye too.
This film is probably most famous for the inclusion of Paris Hilton, who plays Paige. She is also one of the main reasons that the film has been panned in some quarters, and I therefore had very low expectations. To be honest, though, I thought Paris Hilton was absolutely fine. Her role as Paige is kept to a minimum, so she didn't really have much of a chance to muck it up; nevertheless, I liked what I saw and didn't find her at all wooden. Paige is a self-centred, egotistical little madam - perhaps that is why Paris Hilton suited the role!! There is one point when I hated her - when she is doing a strip-tease for her boyfriend and is showing off her skinny frame...but that is just bitterness on my part!
I think anyone taking this film too seriously will find it disappointing. The storyline is totally unrealistic - where in the world would it be possible to have a whole town run by murderers without it coming to anyone's attention? However, taken in the right spirit, this is a fun film in the mould of Final Destination. It didn't ever really make me laugh - it isn't a Scream take-off - but there is a light-hearted vibe to it that make it hard to take it too seriously.
That doesn't mean though that there aren't some truly horrible, bloody moments, because there are. One of the friends (I won't give away which one!) is killed by an axe through the head, a death I thought was particularly well done. Carly has a finger cut off at one point, which results in fountains of blood everywhere. And there are countless other painful moments that made me flinch. Generally, the special effects were convincing enough, if not the most graphic that I have seen. There was one point when the arm of a wax figure was snapped off to show the bone and sinew below - I obviously don't know what an arm would look like in such condition, but I didn't think it looked particularly realistic - however, that was a one-off.
The pacing of the film was good. It took a little while to get to the main story, but there is a bit of a red herring thrown in that makes us think that the story is about to be taken in a slightly different direction, and this kept me occupied until the house of wax storyline.
However, I still found it entertaining viewing; certainly nowhere near as bad as I expected it. If you're looking for some mindless escapism for a couple of hours, then I don't think you can go far wrong with this - just bear in mind that it shouldn't be taken too seriously. Recommended.
Advantages: Paris Hilton get;s bumped off Disadvantages: Nothing new, No scares, Another lame Dark Castle film
...and Gothika we now get House of Wax. On the DVD the producers come up with the line that it's based on the incredibly fun Vincent Price film of the same name. Well it shares the same name and the idea that some of the waxworks are actually corpses. Apart from that everything in it is from 'Hollywood Horror Movie 101'. Token black guy - Check!
Weird looking redneck guy? - Check!
Teen who's a bit pissed ... ...very little apart from a house made out of wax. Inside are lifelike waxworks and general creepiness, naturally the house is shut but they still go in. Of course general hijinks ensue involving a crazy guy making waxworks of said teens and generally adopting a very nasty style of screen gore. House of Wax is nothing new; it's not really got anything cool in it either. The film is pretty much devoid of scares and instead goes for the jugular and dispatches ...

Advantages: All the things I expected from a horror film and more Disadvantages: Predictable ending
***Why did I watch House of Wax*** As an avid horror fan I do try to watch any new horror films that have been released. If the film looks really good then I head the girls to watch it, if it looks fairly average I will wait to hire a copy. Unfortunately my partner does not share my enthusiasm! I actually missed watching this film at the cinema so I rented a copy. ***Cast**** Elisha Cuthbert as Carly Jones (24, The Girl Next Door) Chad Michael Murray ... ...BFF) ***The plot*** House of Wax is remake of a 1953 film that goes by the same name. While the opening credits roll we get to see a brief scene where a couple are forced to put their child into its highchair after the father brings the fighting and screaming child into the room. As the child continues to have a uncontrollable tantrum the child is strapped it its highchair the mother gives the child a good slap and asks the question 'why can't he ...

House of Wax features a cast apparently chosen from their headshots rather than any particular ability or connection to the material. Loosely remade from the Vincent Price classic, Paris Hilton herself says this film's major improvement is that "The original didn't really have a hot cast." Says it all really !! Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra, This is his 1st film that he has done. In my opinion he's done a good job. The main plot is a group of teenagers ... ...placed in a display from house to shops to the church. Creating a wax museum. One by one the friends are picked off to be relived their own wax density. With a few extra twists along the way. The best bits of the film for me personally are when Paris gets a spike through the head. Another bit where the other girl has her mouth super glued together. Classic !!

Advantages: Good acting Disadvantages: Paris Hilton
House of wax is a completely different kind of horror film. The film was exciting and thrilling with a different plot compared to other horrors. Horror films to me are mainly the same; you always have a very simple plot, which usually ends of the master plan of some weirdo who was abused in childhood dead. They also include a very hot young cast, now I am not complaining about the casting choices, however the simple plots really make the film boring ... ...become permanent exhibits in the house of wax.
The casting was almost completely a good choice for me, I really enjoyed the performances of Elisha Cuthbert, and however some of the other casting choices were completely pathetic. I am not a big fan of Paris Hilton, not merely for the bad performances, or the reason she was made famous but for the example she sets for every teenage girl. Her performance was ridiculous; I do believe that she cannot ...

House Of Wax follows 6 youngsters on a road trip to go and see an important football game. They take a short cut and end up camping. The next morning Wade has a few car troubles and decides to walk to the local town to find a garage while his friends carry on with thier plans to go to the football game. His girlfriends stays with him and they go on to the village. The others, after missing half of the game due to traffic decide to go back to collect Wade and Carly. Then One by one they begin falling pray to two murderous wax sculpters.
Although this film is quite gory I loved it! It is one of the best horror films I've ever seen. It wasn't greatly scary but an enjoyable chase with a few twists in the plot.
The cast is great too. I expected Paris Hilton's acting to be slightly dry but I thought she did great along with Chad Michael ...
Advantages: extrodinary movie, rising tension throughout, unexpeced twist at the end Disadvantages: none!
The house of wax 2005 version is an excellently mind-blowing film of this year. Throughout the movie I was left on tenterhooks as to what would happen next, and the originality of the story line was like no other. The cleverness of the whole ' Turning real-life people into wax models for a wax-works museum' was simply extravagant. However, if you are squeemish in any way, this movie is not for you! You get to witness the crazy museum founder pour scolding hot wax onto one of the main characters of the movie, and see him scream in pain whilst the wax sets on him, not able to do anything about it. The whole story of all of the wax models in the museum then reveals the truth........... I actaully found this movie quite grousome, but it was excellent and, i actually found it quite amusing when the famous Paris Hilton died with a metal pole ...
Advantages: Ummm, heart attack if thats an advantage !!! Disadvantages: sometimes unconvincing !!!

DVD Description
In this remake of the classic 1953 Andre de Toth film that starred Vincent Price, horrors abound in a creepy wax museum. A group of road-tripping Florida teenagers (Elisha Cuthbert, Chad Michael Murray, Paris Hilton, Robert Ri'chard, Jared Padalecki, and Jon Abrahams) stop to camp near a small town where an abandoned wax museum draws their curiosity. Upon exploring the scary cobwebbed space, they find that the figures are not only eerily lifelike, but that the entire museum--floor to ceiling--is actually made of wax. If that wasn't enough to scare them, they encounter a couple of very unsettling characters who seem to be the only people around for miles. One is a blood-splattered redneck who collects roadkill, dumping the bodies of dead deer into a fetid carcass swamp. The other is Bo (Brian Van Holt), a gas station attendant who lures the kids back to his house. Soon, through a series of stomach-turning slasher scenes featuring scissors, long knives, and even a pair of pliers, the teens get to know Bo a whole lot better. They even meet his insane brother Vincent (also played by Van Holt). Brief interludes of teen squabbling and a Hilton strip tease in red lace lingerie temporarily break the tension, but for the most part this HOUSE OF WAX stays the course with shockingly gory moments that earn grosser-than-gross status. Sick predilections involving an experimental surgical station and an elaborate wax-coating machine reveal Vincent's artistic process. But before the bloodbath is over, more twisted secrets about Bo and Vincent bubble to the surface, resulting in a spectacular grand finale and total meltdown.
