Oscar Schindler saved thousands of Jews in world war II. Paul Rusesabagina saved over a 1000 Tutsis refugees during the uprising in Rwanda. World war II will be talked about for generations to come. The Genocide in Rwanda went almost unoticed.
It is hard to believe that is was as recent as 1992. Almost one million people were slaughtered during the Hutu militia uprising. The UN were largely unmoved to help anyone other than their own citizens.
Paul Rusesabagina (Don Cheadle) had the unenviable Job of running a hotel, slap-bang in the middle of the hostilities. When the UN evacuates all the foreign nationals, the hotel becomes a refuge for those being hunted. Before they were evacuated, the hotel housed a team of news journalist. Paul's first hope was that the news pictures would cause such outrage that peacekeeping forces would come flooding in. The response from the journalist was that people would think 'that's horrible!' Then carry on with their tea. The response wasn't far off.
Paul has to use all his powers of persuasion to keep them from being massacred. Making deals with anyone whom could protect them. Paul Rusesabagina saved over 1000 lives sheltering them in his hotel.
Hotel Rwanda is not the gore fest you would expect from a film with a machette waving army, but has moments of real tension and fear for the lives of the tutsi people. Time and time again it seems their fate is sealed, but for intervetion from paul, who has to make deals with anyone who will help, whether their motives are good or not.
Hotel Rwanda shows how one mans love for his family and friends, can inspire real courage.
