I do enjoy a good comedy film, so how Hot Fuzz has passed me by so far is a bit of a mystery to me. I loved Simon Pegg's feature film "Run Fat Boy Run" and since I have seen that, lots of people have told me that I would definitely enjoy Hot Fuzz too. So when I went to stay at my parents for a week and they suggested we watch a film, I spotted Hot Fuzz on the shelf and immediately decided that was the film of choice. My family do enjoy a comedy film, and this film certainly didn't disappoint for us, so much so we went out and bought it after seeing it!
PC Nicholas Angel works for the Metropolitan Police in London and loves his job. However, things go a bit sour for him when he is transferred to a quiet Gloucestershire village called Sandford where policing isn't exactly the same as in his beloved London. PC Angel finds himself partner to dimwit Danny Butterman and working for his dad Inspector Butterman. Just as Angel is losing the will to live, mysterious killings start happening in Sandford, and Angel is convinced something sinister is afoot. But his colleagues aren't convinced, thinking the killings are just "unfortunate accidents", leaving Angel to investigate alone. Is he going to find something strange going on in Sandford?
The
premise of this film does sound a bit odd for a comedy, but the laughs started the minute the film did! Simon Pegg is a really great comic actor and completely took on the role of Nicholas Angel with gusto, becoming him on-screen and delivering his deadpan laughs perfectly against the funny delivery by co-stars such as Nick Frost and Jim Broadbent. What I wasn't expecting from this film were the sheer amount of big names in it, and we were constantly exclaiming that another star was on-screen quite regularly throughout which was very impressive! Steve Coogan, Martin Freeman (The Office), Bill Nighy and Stephen Merchant are just a few who made cameo appearances throughout, and the rest of the cast were made up of big names too!
Pegg is really great in this film, and was a joy to watch on screen. The seriousness of his acting is so funny in the comedic setting of the film, and Angel's dedication to the job is actually portrayed very well by him. He manages to pull off serious and funny throughout the film, and worked so well with his main co-star Nick Frost with whom he made a brilliant comedy duo. The pair's characters were so different which made them the perfect screen partnership. Frost was just hilarious as dim cop Danny Butterman, who wants his life to be like the cops in films like Bad Boys. He idolises PC Angel, and this is built upon throughout the film right up until the end. Jim Broadbent is funny as laid-back Inspector Butterman/Danny's dad, and Timothy Dalton takes a punt at comedy as Somerfield store manager Simon Skinner, a flaky and suave character who thinks he is God's gift to Sandford.
What I wasn't expecting was some of the quite gory parts of the film. The murders were shown in some quite graphic and disgusting detail, so much so that I had to turn away because it was gross. I didn't think this would be in a film like this, but it does set it apart from other comedy films I suppose! There is quite a bit of violence in the movie, but it's all within the story and not that unnecessary so I can't really moan about that too much. If you are a bit squeamish though, I would turn away when someone is going to get killed! It's well done on the part of the special effects, because it does seem realistic, but I can't comment that much because my eyes were shut for the most part during these scenes, sorry!
The laughs in the film did keep coming, and the comedy is of a great standard throughout the film. It does really take the mickey of people who live in small country villages, trying to depict them as slow and backwards, but its done in a funny way here so you can't really be insulted. Pegg's character is the cool, calm and collected London bobby and this is perfectly in contrast with wally Danny Butterman. So many things in Sandford were just hilarious, the scenes in the police station at times had me in tears, and were so funny it was brilliant. It really did make me laugh all the way through, and it takes a good writer and cast to deliver on that for me. There are many references to big Hollywood cop films such as Bad Boys throughout, which are made even funnier by Danny's obsessions with these films in the movie. This is Britain's answer to those films, but in our own unique way!
If you love a funny film with a bit of a twist to it, then Hot Fuzz is definitely one for you. Simon Pegg is just brilliant as PC Angel and is such a good comedy actor that he makes the film even better. The rest of the cast are also super, and spotting the cameos throughout is great too, this film does boast a lot of big British names. It has a great story which is slightly ridiculous but thats why it works. Both me, my fiance and my parents all loved it so it is a film to suit all ages, but again do be aware of some of the violence and gore in the film. I highly recommend it, and expect that I will be watching it again with him indoors who really loved it! A British film to be proud of!
