Before I start writing this review in earnest, I am going to make a bit of an admission. I am a huge fan of Simon Pegg! There I have done it, admitted that if he turned up on my doorstep, I would have to seriously restrain myself haha.
Following on from the success of Shaun of the Dead (a review will follow I promise), Hot Fuzz is another collaboration between Pegg and Nick Frost. This pair are like a modern day Laurel and Hardy in my own honest opinion.
***Synopsis***
Sergeant Nicholas Angel (Simon Pegg) is a tough policeman working in London. His results are so good that it is putting his colleagues to shame, so they conspire to get him sent away. His superior officers (Martin Freeman & Bill Nighy) arrange for him to be sent to a sleepy little village where nothing happens.
Angel arrives in the village of Sandford, and has to move into the local hotel
as his cottage is not ready for him yet. He goes for a quick drink in the local pub and swiftly apprehends a potential drunk driver and half of the pub's clientele for being underage drinkers. So it is clear that Sgt Angel is going to be super popular with the residents.
The next morning he finds out that his drunk is Police Constable Danny Butterman (Nick Frost), and that Danny's father is the boss, Inspector Frank Butterman (Jim Broadbent). We also meet the local neighbourhood watch committee, headed up by Tom Weaver (Edward Woodward). The committee are a bit of a funny bunch, but seem to be a bit too nice to each other!
Angel really wants to get back to the action of London, but all that is soon to change. He reprimands a local lawyer for speeding and shortly after, there is a traffic accident involving this man and his "lady friend". But Angel is quick to point out that it is not an accident but an incident!
Soon after, another couple of incidents occur which lead Angel to believe that all is not what it seems in the sleepy village of Sandford. For a start, local supermarket mogul Simon Skinner (Timothy Dalton) seems to know more about whats going on than he should, and Angel is convinced that there is a serial killer on the loose.
No-one believes him, of course, and so ensues a race to find the killer before Angel becomes a victim of his own success.
***My Opinion***
Well, you know I like films with Simon Pegg, so it's a foregone conclusion about this one. I loved it! It's hilarious. I laughed almost all the way through. It's one of those films that you can watch again and again and never get tired of it. Pegg is just great as Angel, with the serious face but the smart comments, especially the one about the shortcut, taken straight from Shaun of the Dead.
I really enjoyed the performances, just as flawless as those from Shaun. Pegg and Frost are a fantastic double act, absolutely spot on in the way they bounce their performances off each other. And to list all of the big names that are in this film would take ages. Needless to say Dalton, Broadbent, Woodward and Billie Whitelaw are superb in their respective roles.
The comic factor is great, but so is the action of the film. With scenes that are reminiscent of Point Break and Bad Boys 2, the film may be a little slow to start at first but soon had me on the edge of my seat, waiting for the next round! I really enjoyed the whole film from start to finish.
I have to compliment the make up artists on the film. I kind of have to, one of my oldest school friends worked on this film as a make up artist (we were in primary school together) and I'm so jealous!
***Final Word***
Recommendation? Wholeheartedly! A full 5 stars from me! I cannot emphasise just how much I thoroughly enjoyed this film and have watched it several times since buying the DVD. I have to admit to not watching the extras on the DVD. I will one day, but till then, this will remain as a film only review.
My advice is to watch this! If you liked Shaun of the Dead, then you will really enjoy this one!
Thanks for reading and happy watching! Di xx
