Yet again the weeekend weather was dreadful so we took a trip to the local DVD shop, this time coming away with a film
that I have been wanting to see for a long time - Hot Fuzz.
The film is really a paradoy of the many cop films out there with a simple but hilarious plot. Simon Pegg plays Nicholas
Angel (or Angle as he is humerously referred to for a large part of the film) a 'super cop' with best clear up rate the
metropolitan police force has ever had, so good in fact that his superior offers make him sergeant and ship him off to a
sleepy little village so that he can no longer put the rest of the metropolitan police force to shame.
The sleepy village, Sanford is Angels idea of hell, there is no mobile phone signal, the police officers ignore under age
drinking and drink driving etc as it for the greater good of the village which has won the coveted 'best UK village' award
more often than not but Nick Angel is never off duty so tries to clamp down on these things. Soon more sinister events
(suspected murders) start to occur and Nick is keen to investigate but the other officers, including his main partner, the
dozy and slightly lazy Danny Butterfield (played by Nick Frost) and the village inspector, Frank Butter (played by Jim
Broadbent, Nick Butterfields father insist it is just a sequence of unfortunate events.
As Angel investigates further the bond between himself and Danny grows stronger. Angel gives Danny advice on how to be a
better cop while Danny helps Angel switch off from the police work whilst over time stopping asking anyoning questions
such as how many times he been in high speed pursuits or had he ever fired 2 guns whilst in mid air ?
Along the way there are too many funny scenes and on-liners to mention but after the first 15 / 20 minutes the laughter
and action is non stop, there are also a few fairly bloody / gory murder schenes but this punctuates the comedy very well.
There are also a large number of cameo appearances (including Martin Freeman, Steve Coogan and Bill Nighy) which again
keeps the interest going with those 'Wasn't that <insert name here>' moments. Then there is the soundtrack which is
equally superb and fitting with tracks from british artists (mainly of yesteryear as befits the setting of a village stuck in a virtual time warp) such as Romeo and Juliet by Dire Straits and Goody two shoes by Adam Ant.
As with most of my film reviews I won't spoil the rest of the plot or the end of the film but it is brilliant right to very end, and with it being vailable for £6.99 in many online shops it is something which many people will want to add to their collection
