When I saw the trailers of Hot Fuzz with the same scene of Nicholas Angel jumping over fences then Danny just running straight through them I thought "OH GOD!". When only one trailer is shown with the same scene again and again you can presume that that scene is the only funny one in the entire film. But when I finally plucked up the courage to use an Amazon rental on the HD Version of the movie I was suprised. The movie keeps you in suspense, laughter and the fact of not knowing "who dun it?" throughout the entire movie.
The Plot
When Nicholas Angel becomes the best Police Officer in London his reputation sours and there is no point where he will allow other factors of his life into his work which results in him losing his house and girlfriend. However as his arrest record continues to increase he begins to make the rest of the Police Force (according to official guidelines it is called the service, thank you Nicholas) Police Service to look bad so
his superiors send him off to the little village of Sandford which has won village of the year for the past many years.
When he reluctantly gets to Sandford he makes his way to the Pub where he finds many underage drinkers and puts the law into action. The next day he meets his partner and they both begin responding to petty crimes and Nicholas Angel feels left out from the rest of the Police Service in the village.
The action all begins when two so called actors are brutally decapitated during a road collision and whereas all the Police officers are convinced it was just an accident Nicholas Angel believes there is more to it than meets the eye. Soon later more people in the village are killed and the Police service still won't meet eye to eye with Angel even after he witnesses one of the murders himself. But then Angels figures out a factor that connect all of the victims and he believe he has caught the killer.
Special Effects
There aren't a huge ammount of special effects in the movie until right at the end where Nicholas and Danny fight the killer(s) using various weapons. The fight is not very realistic as hundreds of shots are fired and hardly anyone is hurt badly but this is one of the reasons why the movie is funny.
Cast
The whole film is filled with famous British actors that you will constantly recognise from various British TV shows these actors include:
Steve Coogan - I'm Alan Partridge Bill Nighy - Pirates of the Caribean Martin Freeman - Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy Timothy Dalton - James Bond Stephen Merchant - Extras Bill Bailey - Comedian
and many others.
Sound
Sometimes in the film you felt that you had to turn up the volume to hear what was going on only to then be blasted by a train going past which shook the entire room but still the quality of the sound was alright and I have nothing to complain about it.
Probems
The one problem that I felt was wrong with the film was that during the fight scenes there were too many camera changes from one shot to another and you felt yourself getting a bit dizzy trying to keep up with the action.
HD DVD
Watching this film on HD dvd was a real treat and if you have an hdtv I highly recommend you buy either a ps3 or blu ray player or an hd dvd player as the quality is just outstanding.
Bonus features
Of course the classic out takes are always fun to watch as they show you which scenes took more than even 5 takes to get right and overall is just hilarious. There is also the option of watching the film again with written commentry which tells you liitle unknown facts about the making of scenes or just little references to things in the film such as the number on Angel's Shoulder being 777 also known as God's number. This idea is good but I don't think anyone would actually watch through the entire film again just to read the commentary.
Overall
A great film which may not be alright for the whole family as swearing does occur quite a few times and the murders do get a bit gory but it is funny throughout and unlike other murder mysterys can be watched over and over again. 10/10
