In 2005, Eli Roth took us to a new level, in terms of the horror movie. With the original hostel, we were shown a shocking underworld. A place where people pay to torture, and kill other human beings. Scary, in essence, because it was something that could happen, rather than the usual unrealistic tripe that we have become used to. It seemed, that Hostel had tapped into a new market. A market where people want to be shocked. They want to be scared. They want to be taken as far as they can go, and then dragged a little further.
Essentially, Hostel was an exploitation film. Sado-erotica at its best. You could watch it, and drink your fill of blood, gore, sex and adrenaline pumping thrills. So, it was natural to me to want to see the sequel. It seemed to come out a bit too quickly for me, but I was still very excited by the prospect. I must confess, however, that I had my reservations. The first film was unique, and self contained. What could they do to improve on it?
It seems to be, that Eli Roth has a singular vision. A vision that, though once remarkable, has now become dull and boring. His inability to look around the box, has led him to have a much shorter career than he should. He should have taken more time creating hostel part two, or else not have bothered with a sequel at all. The plot, which is thinner than Homer Simpsons' hair, is basically the exact same one from the first film. The events of the film, are 'similar, but not as scary. The acting is perhaps slightly worse, and all he has done to try and make this a film in its own right, is give it an all female lead cast, and provided a Taratinoesque twist, at the end. This would have been a compliment a decade ago, but I am afraid Tarantino is past it.
The plot, sparse as it is, consists of two female friends going on a trip to Prague. They are joined by a geeky 'friend', and get intercepted by a gorgeous woman who persuades them to go to a hostel in Slovakia, which boasts fantastic hot springs. They trust the total stranger, which we all know is a bad idea. They are led to the hostel, where they are offered to rich men, and women who want to pay for the 'pleasure' of torturing, and killing them.
The main differences between this, and the plot of the first film are that the characters are women, and they are travelling to enjoy some natural hot springs, rather than to find some easy women to pull. Apart from that, it is the same film all over again. Sure, the actual violence is slightly different in nature, and the film contains a lot more insight into the life of the people doing the torturing. Bur realistically we have been here before. And this is why the film just isn't as shocking. We expect it, and so it isn't a surprise.
The effects are good, without being too hi-tec. The acting is appalling, and I won't embarrass them by putting their names on here. They belong in b-movies, but I suppose in a way they are already in one. The shock, and class of the first film are lost. The plot, offers nothing new, or significant until the end. But by this point, you really couldn't care. The 85 minutes before it see to that.
Overall, this film is a poor effort. I really couldn't see how they could pull off a sequel to Hostel, and its seems that neither could Eli Roth. Lacklustre, and without class, this one blunders through not offering too much for the seasoned fan of the genre. Horror should never verge on the humourous, but this does. Some of the acting, and scene stuctures make you giggle because they are just so bad. When it comes to great sequels, I can name three. Hostel part two, as you may have already guessed, is not one of them.
...just become depressing and uncomfortable. Hostel 2 falls neatly into the latter category. I could write a detailed plot synopsis like I usually do in my reviews, but what it boils down to is this - three young American women travel to Prague, get abducted and tortured to death in a variety of gory ways by people who have paid for the pleasure. That's it, really. There are no subtle plot twists, no symbolism, no allegory, nothing. It's just people ... ...loving detail. You can almost imagine director Eli Roth jerking off during the literal blood bath scene. I'm not really a fan of this brand of horror (I have similar feelings towards the later Saw movies) so I suppose this one was never going to get high marks from me. It's not because I'm particularly squemish (I think gore and nudity have a place in any good horror film) but honestly, I just don't find anything entertaining about this movie. It's ...

Advantages: If there are any I must have over-looked them! Disadvantages: Weak storyline, very violent
...last one. We'll be on Hostel Part 150 if this is how much it improves until we get a decent film out of this series. This time it's the girls turn. Three students, Beth (Lauren German), Whitney (Bijou Phillips) & Lorna (Heather Matarazzo) are convinced by a model they were sketching to check into a Hostel in Slovakia. They take this advice & decide to check into. At the desk the girls passports are taken so the clerk can upload their passport photos ... ...this film & the previous Hostel film just don't match up to his previous glory.
My boyfriend bought this from Tesco for £9.99 which like the other one at £4.99 is still way too expensive for a film of this quality. The special features include;
Commentary Behind the scenes featurette
Special effects featurette
Set design featurette
Blood & guts blooper reel
Deleted scenes
Basically all the same extras you get with the first film… great! ...

Advantages: lots of blood Disadvantages: lots of blood!
...is the follow up to Hostel and it is very similar to the first. We start out by watching a group of girls who are traveling around. They decide that their next stop will be Prague until a stunning, modelesque woman encourages them to go to Slovakia. When they get there, the woman leads them to a hostel where they hand in their passports, pick up their keys and start enjoying their holiday. Unbeknownst to them, people all over the world start bidding ... ...of a building where normal people come to kill. Like I have already said this is very similar to the first and I did think that it dragged a little in places and was fairly predictable. It wasn't until the girls get down in the dungeons that the film 'hots' up and there are some very exciting twists and turns that makes the film an individual. Much like the first film there is a lot of blood and gore which I know will scare some people off. There ...

...been scanned behind the Slovakian hostel counter. Scenes like these are thought provoking and welcomed in any film. We also see new creative ways in which the organisation uses to kidnap women, though these seem uneccessarily elabourate in some cases, which diminish the sense of realism for a while.
As is the trend with sequels, we are treated to ever darker gore scenes. They seem fewer, but this doesn't diminish from the terror, and it's not just ... ...of their victims. I am not one who shocks easily, and feel the gore aspect was well done to serve the plot, and not too gratuitous.
CHARACTERS:
As in the first film, the acting talent is high. They are solid people who you can empathise with. Of course the women are mostly beautiful teenager semi-stereotypes, but a gorgeous girl being a victim always works better - I don't make the rules, this is human nature.
The central character is a believably ...

Advantages: Great special effects, a couple of twists in the tale Disadvantages: Some will find it pointless and gory, acting of differing levels
Three American girls, Beth, Lorna and Whitney are travelling across Europe and meet a beautiful artist's model, who advises them to go to a hostel in Slovakia where they can enjoy spa treatments. Intrigued, they set off, delighted to find that the model has decided to join them. All goes well at first; the hostel and surroundings are beautiful and even Lorna, who is shy and geeky, finds herself a man. But then Lorna disappears. Concerned, Beth tries to find her, but is persuaded by the others that Lorna is probably having the time of her life. Then Whitney disappears and Beth is chased by two very dangerous looking men. Before she knows it, she is fighting for her life at the hands of men who have paid to see her die. Will she and her friends live to return to the US?
The acting is seriously not the most important part of this movie ...
Advantages: Minor development of story Disadvantages: Irritating characters, Unimaginative, Pretty sick
There I was fumbling through the sky movie channels last night and I noticed on the premier channel that as Die Hard 4 was finishing, Hostelpart2 was about to start so for whatever reason I decided to watch.
Now having subjected to myself to the first film I have to say that my expectations were pretty low. The first film centred about a couple of irritating young americans who. along with their scandinavian friend set about trekking through europe only to stumble across a hostel that doubled up as a paradise. But, wait for it.. it amazingly wasn't the paradise they first thought it was. In fact it was a scam whereby the hostel provides some idiot youths for rich people to pay to slaughter - this sounds ridiculous but I actually thought it was a pretty unique twist on an otherwise humdrum film.
So he we are for another part ...
Advantages: A good sequal to last years classic Disadvantages: Not quite as fresh, but still has the ability to shock
year I was not so fortunate as to avoid all the publicity that went along with Hostel2, neither was I expecting to get a review copy of the DVD quite so quickly.
Two young American women are studying art in Italy, and as a way of getting some escape from various issues they decide that this weekend is the ideal opportunity to take a trip to Prague. Whitney is somewhat a hell raiser, where as Beth is more reserved and certainly more considerate. It?s that consideration that makes Beth invite their room-mate Lorna on their excursion to Prague; much to the annoyance of Whitney who finds Beth far too prudish.
The trio of girls soon becomes a quartet and the Axelle an artist?s model soon joins the group; and after a nightmarish encounter on the train to Prague Axelle persuades the girls to drop the idea of man hunting in Prague ...
American backpackers Beth, Whitney, and Lorna are travelling around Europe when they meet Axelle, a gorgeous woman who persuades them to follow her to a rejuvenating spa in Slovakia. However, the spa/hostel in question has some nasty surprises in store for the trio.

Astute and subversive... Eli Roth has crafted a sequel to die for (Total Film, 18/09/2007)
DVD Description
With only one film under his belt and the endorsement of Quentin Tarantino, Eli Roth became a virtual horror brand with HOSTEL (2005), a yarn about a group of thrill-seeking American college dudes backpacking through Europe, only to be seduced into a Slovakian money-for-torture ring where they became the prey. The sequel begins right where that film left off, filling us in on the whereabouts of lone survivor Paxton (Jay Hernandez)---but before long, we see that gender roles are reversed and we are traveling with sensible Beth (Lauren German), hedonistic Whitney (Bijou Phillips), and virginal Lorna (Heather Matarazzo). After tussling with a gaggle of shifty men on a train, they meet Axelle (Vera Jordanova), a gorgeous woman who persuades them to follow her to a rejuvenating spa in Slovakia. As the trio checks into the same infamous hostel, Roth shows us the inner workings of the previously mysterious torture club. Once the girls are put up on the auction block, online bidding begins among the clubs members---who are revealed to be prominent international businesspeople. After Beth and Whitney are won by type-A American corporate jerk Todd (Richard Burgi), who believes that killing someone will give him power, and his reluctant associate, Stuart (Roger Bart), the film shifts to the preparations for their inaugural slayings within the bloody walls of the warehouse. For those who embraced HOSTEL's abrupt tonal shifts and very realistic gore, Roth serves up amplified doses of both in his follow-up. Astute horror fans will find a few amusing in-jokes among the carnage, but beware---things get incredibly strong, and Roth's charnel house chic intends to offend.
