The Hostel from Hell

Advantages: Sex and gore if you like it
Disadvantages: Sex and gore if you don't

After wondering over to the cinema in the freezing cold and pouring rain, my friend and I were forced to accept that there simply was not a single film on at a decent time that we were likely to really enjoy. Neither of us had seen many trailers recently and we did not want to risk forking out £7 for a film we might not even like. Instead we decided to head home and just watch a DVD at her place. She has plenty of films that she enjoys watching again ...
...DVDs and was in the mood for some sort of horror. She recommended this film, and since I had been wondering what the weird trailers were about and why it was the subject of jokes on one of my favourite TV shows recently, I was keen to see it. I used to be quite a fan of the horror genre, but these days it is more just something I occasionally feel like watching, to see whether anything still surprises me. Generally I am disappointed, sometimes I ... more

Not a Hostile Hostel

Advantages: Some nice editing
Disadvantages: The whole is less than the sum of the parts

...locked out of their Amsterdam hostel, they meet a fellow traveller who tells them of a hostel where there are even more women and sex on tap. This being a shared interest, they take his advice and head off to Bratislava in Slovakia in search of the beautiful and sexually uninhibited women he spoke of. Within minutes of their arrival at the hostel, they find what they seek in the forms of Natalya and Svetlana, who they meet for the first and second ...
...to know the town, so the boys follow along for what promises to be the night of their lives. And indeed it is, until they wake up the following morning to find that Oli has gone. From here, their stay at the hostel takes a much darker turn. Not being a horror fan, I was expecting to be scared and grossed out in pretty much equal measure throughout the film. Instead, what I ended up being mostly was pretty bored. Fortunately, at only 95 minutes, ...

Tourism in Slovakia dies a death!

Advantages: Brutal, bloody and a truly horrific movie!
Disadvantages: Brutal, bloody, story a bit ropey and some stages really horrific

Billed as one of the most bloody films ever made, with rumours abound in the months before release that it wasn't even going to get past the BBFC censors without some major cuts Hostel has a lot, a hell of a lot, of hype to live up to. The involvement of Quentin Tarantino (do I need to tell you his films?), Japanese horror auteur Takeshi Miike (Audition, Ichi the Killer) and Eli Roth (writer/director of Cabin Fever) makes the expectations grow to ...
...that maybe, just maybe the hype will be lived up to, for once. Does it live up to this hype when you actually see the film? Well yes and no. It certainly is one of the most brutal films I have seen for a long time. The carnage and violence committed in this film will take some beating, more so because it is not a random serial killer type brutal and bloody but consists of a lot of horrific and sickening torture. I am a hardened filmgoer and not ...

Cinema of the grotesque

Advantages: Disc can be thrown a LONG way
Disadvantages: What's on it

...because of it. Nothing in Hostel, a 21st century "video nasty" comes close to matching it. The cinematography runs along the lines of blood, dank, blood, dank and quickly becomes repititious. The music score is at best serviceable with nothing that stands out in any way. Why many of the "Dutch" people are speaking German, I have no idea. Probably because the cast assembled in the Czech republic speak it more readily, I imagine. Although I've never ...
...film is set is supposed to be full of friendly, cosmopolitan locals with a famed nightlife. Depicting the country as a nation of corrupt policemen, murderous backwards, uncultured and dirty thugs to say nothing of roaming bands of street kids armed with broken bottles does nothing to help a country working its collective ass off to rise themselves out of poverty. Roth has tried to claim that the movie shows "American ignorance overseas." Yeah, much ...

I'm a bit Hostile towards Hostel...

Advantages: You won't need your thinking cap for this one
Disadvantages: Ohhh, where do I begin?!

Please note: This is a FILM ONLY review. Now...I really should tell you the plot of this movie, but I'm really not sure I can without it becoming a spoiler. You see, the problem here is the plot is so thin, that telling you anything might well give the game away. About the only thing I can tell you is that in essence, this is about two America college students, Paxton and Josh (Jay Hernadez and Derek Richardson) who, along with their Icelandic travelling ...
...drugs and more sex. After a chance meeting they find themselves in a Hostel where the women are to die for (quite literally). When Oli apparently leaves them without so much as a goodbye, they decide it's time to cut their losses and carry on with their European tour. If only things were that simple... With Quentin Tarintino name appearing on the movie, I was expecting a high quality of on-screen story-telling and visual splendour. I was very, very ...

Why Always Bratislava?!?

Advantages: slightly original scenes
Disadvantages: doesn't live up to the hype

You must have seen the adverts for Hostel. It was billed to be, and advertised to look like, the most extremely gorily sick twisted film ever made, and had Quentin Tarantino's approval. So on the strength of this, I of course really wanted to see it for myself. I was expecting to be disgusted, I was expecting to be disturbed, I was expecting to have to leave halfway through to get some fresh air to restore my ability not to be sick. I didn't really ...
...of three travellers - two american friends and one Icelander that they met on their way around Europe. They're just doing all the clichéd European things for young people, like getting stoned in Amsterdam, until they meet a guy who tells them of a place well off the beaten tourist track. A place called Bratislava, in Slovakia. Apparently there, the girls are "so beautiful" and up for anything. So on the stength of That, the three lads up and go straight ...

hostel DVD

Advantages: great gore scenes
Disadvantages: not enough gore scenes

well im def dissapointed! is this really a Quentin Taratino film? i love Quentin's films they're usually sick, twisted and cruel. The idea for this film is brilliant, people paying to kill somebody in the exact way they choose, ant they can choose the victims sex and race! but it feels like they thought of the hostel idea and forgot to develop it! it needs more to the story, more gore and more killing. i think the story becomes a little predictable also. the killings that do happen are quite good but i feel for an 18 horror flick, theres not enough! the characters performances arent bad, they're def better in the killing scenes, it wouldof been better with bigger names but then it would of have to of been a much better film! i cant complain about the effects they're good! there are cutting open peoples heels and drilling into peoples ...

Hostel - Unseen Edition (DVD)..oh how i wish i hadnt seen

Advantages: Some good acting, typical gore from Tarantino
Disadvantages: Storyline and characters lack depth

Directed by Eli Roth and released in 2005, 'Hostel' is one of the most violent and brutal movies you'll ever see. But is this true? I dont think its as violent as it was hyped up to be, and its certainly not a great horror film. Hostel is about a small group of backpackers who travel to Europe in search of women and a great experience after college. They find themselves in a tiny village filled with the women they were looking for. At first all seems well as the boys go to a club, drink and meet girls. However, then the movie takes a darker twist as they are kidnapped and taken to a secret location somewhere in the countryside. Millionaires from around the world travel to this location and pay to torture and kill innocent tourists for "fun" when they arent at the office pushing paperwork. The boys find themselves begging for survival ...

Review of Hostel (Unseen Edition) (DVD)

Reasons not to go Hostelling

Advantages: Decent production standards which save it from being horrific
Disadvantages: The cross genre fails to gel, and the gore is not scary enough

● Synopsis 2 American students and their Icelandic friend are currently enjoying the delights of Amsterdam's Sex, Booze and drugs culture, as they back-pack across Europe, when they learn about a hostel in Slovakia where the women are easy, especially if you have a foreign accent. With the prospect of easy women to good to be missed the three friends head to the hostel where they discover that it is even better than they believed, except strange things start to happen whilst they are there. ● Opinion I had heard and read some great things about Eli Roth's "Hostel" and although was never in a rush to watch it, when the opportunity arose to watch the DVD I sat down with expectations of being entertained as well as horrified. Well sadly I was neither entertained nor horrified, in fact I was more bored than anything as ...
