After writing a numerous reviews on chick flicks and romantics I had to have a change and decided to write my review based on the film "Hostage" which to me is a very amazing, edge of your seat, emotional film to me but to others it may be a totally different ball game! I watched this film when it came on tele last year and had to buy it as I thought it was that good and wanted to watch it again. It came out in 2005 (March) and was directed by Florent Emilio Siri, the novel was written by Robert Crais, the film was written by Doug Richardson. The main character in the film is Bruce Willis off course, who else could of done this part with such character?? Hats of to Bruce!!
Basic Storyline
Jeff Talley played by Bruce Willis is devastated after failing to rescue a mother and child from a hostage situation, he decides to leave Los Angeles for a job with low crime of Bristo Camino, a small town in Ventura County. Three young male teenagers follow home a family intending to steal there car, they have picked the wrong day and wrong time and wrong house! They become trapped inside this multi-millionaire home on the outskirts of the town, which is owned
by an accountant (who works for a crime enterprise) they take the family (father and 2 children) hostage. Which causes poor old Jeff Talley to be in the situation he never wanted to be in again!! However, Jeff turns the case over to the county's sheriff department and leaves asap…But things take a turn when the accountant has some very sensitive mysterious crime enterprise information and the people of the enterprise will stop at literally nothing to get what is theirs! So with that going on poor old Jeff is forced to come back and take lead role in the situation he never wanted to be back in! (don't want to give too much of the plot away even though I'm dying to say this happens and this…but I will shut up and let you see for yourselves)
Main Characters
Bruce Willis - Jeff Talley Kevin Pollak - Walter Smith (Accountant) Jimmy Bennett - Tommy Smith (Accountants son and an amazing actor, he was really good 10/10 for his performance for a young actor) Michelle Horn - Jennifer Smith (Accountants daughter who uses her charms as best as she can the little minx!!) Serena Scott Thomas - Jane Talley (Jeffs wife) Rumer Willis - Amanda Talley (Jeffs daughter but is also the daughter of Bruce in real life with Demi Moore) Ben Foster - Mars Krupcheck (Dizzy/dopey/annoying one of the three lads who hold the family hostage) Jonathan Tucker - Dennis Kelly (One of the three lads) Marshall Allman - Kevin Kelly (one of the three lads)
My Opinion
I love it with such a passion, its hard for poor old Jeff, do you risk your own family to save another is the basic message in this?? He is a brilliant actor in the film and shows so much emotion yet he is suppose to act hard as nails…He has to deal with not only the family who are being held hostage in the house but his own family, how do you choose?? When your such a powerful and talented man do you really need to make that choice?? All he wanted was a quiet low keep life after what happened with the first hostage situation but this one is much more terrifying for him. The boys who keep the family hostage are a bit weird to say the least, one of them is as grubby as anything and low life, he just looks and plays the part of the dizzy boy so well, the daughter in the film of the accountant kind of used her charms to make the dizzy boy think that she likes him in order to get away but does her charms actually pay of from the dizzy boy?? For the little boy playing in this I think he is amazing for a child, if I was that child I would of hated doing the scenes, they are quite intense. So many people die in this film and to be honest I got a bit fed up with the F word being used so many times in this film, that's the only dislike bit I would say about the film. But I must admit the film was a bit confusing at first as some parts you think who are they?? Until it is unravelled, that's why a second watch is really good. I think that Bruce in this film was really good, it reminded me a lot of his character in sixth sense to be honest. Would I actually recommend this film?? Yes I would, it is an exciting film, some bits are jumpy and have you on the edge of your sit, I was a wimp and had a pillow with me the first time…why I hear you say cos I thought it was like a horror by the name of the film!! There is deaths in the film, people get attacked and injured so there is blood, lots of guns and gun shots…
Price and Packaging
The DVD comes in a case with Bruce on the front with a good facial expression holding a gun up high, with HOSTAGE written in red with the background of a man holding a gun! I brought the DVD for £8.99 ages ago but I'm sure its a lot cheaper now looking around!
Other info
The DVD runs for 113mins so just about an hour and 40 minutes which isn't too bad for a good intense film like this one, it can be watched with subtitles. It is rated a 15 for the strong language (THE F WORD 89 TIMES) and death scenes I imagine! The film was also nominated for 2 awards.
Special Features on DVD
Feature length Commentary with Director Florent Siri Behind the Scenes Deleted and extended scenesI would definitely recommend this film without a fail…it's a must see!
Thanks for reading Mell (June 2008)

Advantages: Fantastic one liners, the arguments between the family members and Denis Leary/Kevin Spacey! Hilarious!! Disadvantages: Slow start and it could've been a longer film...ah well!!
