Hostage - Would you sacrifice another family to save your own?
This is the dilemma facing Bruce Willis in the film Hostage. It's not one of his well known films as far as I'm concerned but it is still a Bruce Willis classic, i.e., lots of guns and violence etc. The film was released in 2005 and was actually based on a novel by Robert Crais.
As I don't like to spoil films in my reviews I will just give you a brief overview of the plot. Bruce Willis is a police chief in a small town, the fictional Bristo Camino in Ventura California. Apparently, for anyone who knows California the town is supposed to resemble Ojai or Moorpark. Having been to both places I could see how that could be true. Bruce (Jeff Talley) has recently moved here from Los Angeles where he was a hostage negotiator but after a very harrowing last job he decides to move to a quieter pace of life - huh, little does he know!!
Yes, you've guessed it; things take a turn for the worst. Three troublesome kids (and in the beginning they do seem quite harmless) decide to steal a car from a magnificent mansion in the hills of California. Well, things go wrong and the house becomes a fortress with the hostages and the captors. Inside the house are a father and his two children. The little boy actor here does a great job and its very fun to watch him navigate all the little nooks in the house to try and hide from the baddies.
A subplot then arises in the film, some other non-identified bad guys want something inside the house (the father is an accountant who does some creative accounting for the bad guys) and they use Bruce Willis to get it - by kidnapping his family. So now two families are the subject of a kidnapping, however will it end?!!
Well, and look away now if you don't want me to spoil the end, Bruce Willis saves the day yet again. Without going into too much detail the end is very gory and explosive and not for the fainthearted. It is quite suspenseful which I liked, in parts it could be described as a physiological thriller. It has some heart pounding moments and all in all I enjoyed this film. It's not one I would rush to see again though but entertaining. In parts I did feel it was a bit too long though and some of the scenes could have been cut down.
The film is rated 15 as it contains strong language and violence and I would definitely not show it to anyone under 15 or even over, it could be a bit suggestive and tempt bad kids to do bad things.
It runs for approximately 113 minutes and includes various deleted scenes such as feature length commentary by director Florent Siri, behind the scenes and deleted/extended scenes.

This has been posted in the category for the Blu-Ray DVD, but mentions nothing about the new Blu-Ray format. Given that this has been posted in this specialised category, I would like to know about the quality of the new format.
