Horton Hears a Who?

Horton Hears a Who is the new animated film adaption of the Dr. Seuss book of the same name. Jim Carrey stars as Horton, an elephant who leads a pretty nice life in the jungle. One day he happens upon a dust speck that lands on a clover. In credibly he thinks he hears a voice coming form the speck, and lo and behold, he is right. It is the voice of Ned McDodd the Mayor of Whoville. Whoville is a small, microscopic I guess you could call it, town with lots of inhabitants. The mayor alone has 96 daughters and one son. The mayor is played by Steve Carell (he played the part of David Brent in the US version of the Office and was also in the movie 40 year old Virgin) In my opinion he is really good in this role and makes the character believable. I think Jim Carrey is great though as he always plays an outlandish part and this role definitely calls for that. He makes the elephant funny, entertaining and quite loveable so you are really cheering him on during the movie.

Horton and the mayor decide that the clover is not the safest place for the speck and he decides to move it to a new home, a flower on the very top of a hill far, far away. Most of the movie then follows Horton on his journey to re-home the speck. However, along the way he faces trouble from the Sour Kangaroo (played by Carol Burnett - a legendary actress in America). If you want to find out if he re-homes the speck or not then I would definitely recommend the movie.

What actually prompted me to see this was the fact that I saw it discussed on the Oprah show when I was in America last week. Oprah said that the film had quite a message to give. The kangaroo says if you can't see something and can't hear something then it doesn't exist. Well Oprah likened this to people beliefs in God or other things out there and was perhaps saying that no, look at what this film is showing and even if you can't see something, it is still there and may be a whole other universe that we are not aware of. Deep she called the movie and I guess you could say that. There was definitely a message in it which may be underlying but you can't help but notice it.

I think it also gives a message in that even though no one believed Horton in the beginning he stood his ground and stood up for what he believed in, in the face of adversity and went on to make a real difference, lessons we could all take on board. His motto is "a person is a person, no matter how small, and I think this is a really poignant point.

It is as well, just a fun, pleasant movie for kids. The animation is great, the characters have really been drawn well and all the voices definitely match their personalities, a fun family film that I definitely recommend.
