A very close shave....
Advantages: great cast, great story Disadvantages: none for me
"A bleeding masterpiece"
Sweeney Todd (The demon barber of Fleet street) to give the film its full name was released just less than a year ago, the film was showing at cinemas from the 25th January and I remember the queues were huge!
Set in 19th century London, Sweeney Todd tells the story of a wronged man; Benjamin Barker, he is just returning (illegally) from deportation to Australia for a crime he didn't commit, he is helped by a young sailor ... ...incredibly spooky....but somehow still sexy Sweeney Todd and Helena Bonham Carter is equally disturbing as the crazy Mrs Lovett. Alan Rickman plays the evil Judge Turpin and carries this part off well. But I don't think the film really needed the odd performance from Sacha Baron Cohen as all I can think when I see him is Ali G!
With scary films the ending is usually easy to see coming but I think in this case the twist is unexpected and really shocked ...

The Japanese Twilight Zone - in 5 minute bursts
Advantages: Plenty of stories, easy for loo/tea breaks Disadvantages: Likes the spooky girl with white nightie a bit much

It has quite a distinguished pedigree too. The cover tells us that such directors as Takashi Shimziu ("Ju-on: The Grudge"), Norio Tsuruta ("Ring 0"), Hiroshi Takahashi ("Ring 2") and Kei Horie ("The Grudge 2") have all contributed.

Grapes of... Death?
Advantages: Has moments of real tension; better than some of Rollin's other works Disadvantages: Subtitled; plot seems to have been added as an afterthought in places
Starring: Marie-Georges Pascal, Felix Marten, Serge Marquand, Mirella Rancelot
Written By: Jean-Pierre Bouyxou; Christian Meunier
Directed By: Jean Rollin
It was the title of this movie that drew me in. When I first heard it I thought it was some gothic retelling of the famous novel. When I found out it was a French film by Jean Rollin, I decided to watch it anyway - because of the title.
At a vineyard in France, a new pesticide is being used ... ...having a negative effect on the workers spraying it, which is one of the biggest case of forshadowing I've seen in a while. Of course, the pesticide ends up turning the workers insane (and also melts them, it seems...), and one poor girl travelling to the vineyard and nearby village to meet her fiance ends up having to try to escape from a hoard of murderous melting people. In the meantime, there's lots of blood and gore, and any female Our Heroine ...

Uncut and unsophisticated!
Advantages: uncut Disadvantages: Poor
...from his audience. Hours later, the tricks become horrific reality, in this Twilight Zone-style twisted tale from Herschell Gordon Lewis (BLOOD FEAST; 2000 MANIACS).
A pretty TV presenter and her news reported boyfriend invite the magician onto her show - and the magician sees this as a chance to hypnotise the nation, causing mass murder!
THE WIZARD OF GORE is enjoyable hokum, and gets away with its lousy acting and plasticine-type FX work due ... ...be said that whenever the wizard is not on stage the film tends to sag, and is therefore wildly uneven. Fortunately, there's enough grisly set pieces at regular intervals to keep things interesting. Just. It is, in other words, typical Herschell Gordon Lewis fare. But as dubiously enjoyable as that may be, Lewis never reaches the heady heights (lows?!) of his BLOOD FEAST films in this outing. In fact, the main point of interest in THE WIZARD OF GORE ...
