A unique spin on old formula.

Advantages: Looks gorgeous, soundtrack is amazing, creatures are memorable.
Disadvantages: May be too dark for some.

A unique spin on the Alice in Wonderland formula, this deeply personal work from Guillermo del Toro is a wonderful mix of fantasy, horror, fairy tale and of course drama. The scenes of an innocent young girl, becoming engulfed in the politics of the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War complement the more fantastical elements as Ofelia gets visitations from a mysterious faun. Del Toro fills the screen with his imaginative richly detailed visuals and ...
...Baquero. Not since Jodie Foster's turn in Taxi Driver have I been so impressed with a young girl's mature acting skills. Hopefully its a star in the making. In the meantime we can rejoice that a filmmaker like Del Toro continues to create these original and fantastical movies. The Hobbit is looking very promising indeed. ...

If You Are Not Back By Midnight...You won't Be Coming Home.

Advantages: Good Old Fashioned 1980's Horror/Thriller.
Disadvantages: A little bit dark in places.

...I first watched Prom Night many years ago when I was a teenager and I remember it as quite a scary horror movie of it's time. Maybe because it was one of the first horror films I had actually watched that made me remember it so well. Well I just recently picked Prom Night up quite cheaply on DVD and thought I would add it to my collection as it is a good film and one that I had enjoyed. My friends and I all talked about this film at School also I ...
...really. Well Prom Night was made in 1980 and stars Leslie Nielsen and Jamie Lee Curtis one of my favourite actresses from this era. The Movie is also directed by Paul Lynch. It was filmed in London Ontario Canada and was re-made last year in 2008. The Movie lasts for around an hour and a half and cost around $1,600000 to make, so was quite low budget really. Prom Night won a few awards shortly after it's release, from Best Achievement in Film ...

The Tall Man is coming!

Advantages: It comes in a cool "phantasm sphere", which contains four good films - and a bonus disc!
Disadvantages: This series may not be for your run-of-the-mill horror fan - it's a cult type of series!

A. Michael Baldwin plays a kid who suspects something is up at the local cemetary - he goes to investigate and finds all kinds of weird things going on in the mortuary at the hands of the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm). As the series goes on he grows up and tries time after time to escape the Tall Man and try and stop his evil plans for world domination, and avoid death at the hands of "THE SPHERE". A. Michael Baldwin is replaced in the second film by ...

In its own way a horror classic

Advantages: Great locations, dreamlike narrative, great villain, memorable characters
Disadvantages: Lame effects (for the most part), looks dated

...of the modern horror film. Phantasm has a lot going for it - a truly memorable villain (the eponymous Tall man), decent characters (with the best being the king of one liners - Ice cream salesman, Reggie Bannister - as himsel), great settings ( a mausoleum) and enough gore to satisfy gore hounds). All of this, combined with a dream like narrative and frequent (sometimes highly confusing) plot twists, add up to a highly enjoyable horror outing. Of ...
...young director (Don Coscarelli) and was made in the late 70s, there are some plot holes, bad acting and lame effects. In my opinion however, this adds to the enjoyment factor of the film and puts many (if not all) modern efforts to shame. All in all one of my favourite horror films from the golden era of true horror and infinitely superior to most of the sequels (except II) 8 out of 10 ...

Worth Watching

Advantages: Tense thriller...
Disadvantages: Not a horror movie.

Director: Franck Khalfoun Story: Alexandre Aja & Grégory Levasseur Genre: Horror - Thriller Country: USA Certification: 18 Language: English Released: 29th August, 2008 (DVD) MAIN CAST: Wes Bentley (Thomas) Rachel Nichols (Angela) Simon Reynolds (Mr. Harper) Philip Akin (Karl) Angela, a successful lawyer who spends more time working than she does 'living', is trying to make it to her sister's house in time for Christmas - she's picked up ...
...time to purchase gifts for her sister's children, and now all she needs is to arrive on time. Unfortunately for her, her car won't start, and the security guard in charge of the parking area has decided that he isn't spending Christmas alone. 'P2' if not an incredibly good movie, is passably entertaining. The format has been done… over and over… however, it possesses a certain amount of originality that makes it, at times, almost riveting. The ...
