Great collection of Roger Corman films

Advantages: 3 great films for a budget price
Disadvantages: Picture quality not too good

The films on the 3 discs are a selection of Roger Corman productions between 1960 and 1963. Little Shop Of Horrors from 1960 is first up.A young Jack Nicholson makes an early screen appearence. A dimwitted florists assistant discovers a mutant plant that can talk and must feed on blood to survive. The Terror from 1963 stars Boris Karloff and Jack Nicholson (again).Nicholson follows an apparition to a castle where he finds Karloff and discovers ...

Amicus boxed set

Advantages: Good films, quite entertaining, a must for Hammer horror fans
Disadvantages: poor quality packaging even though it looks good

The Amicus Boxed set is a wonderful Collectors piece for any vintage horror fan. I particularly appreciate the shape of the box, although it is difficult to put on a shelf with other DVDs it is also a bit awkward to open and the CDs fall out. Which is really annoying. . The Boxed set includes: ...And now the screaming starts An extremely gothic film in which a virgin bride is brought ancestral home of a family with a curse upon it. The bride is ...
...stories in one format, as The mysterious Doctor Terror boards a train and tells the begins to read the tarot cards of the other 5 people in the train compartment. This film is definitive of Amicus style of film If you watch one watch this one. The House that dripped blood Another of Amicus multiple stories in one films the pretext is an investigator interviews the custodian of an old house and is told of the fates of its previous tenants. The star-studded ...

Little plastic robots? Just stamp on them

Advantages: It's cheap, silly, and will make you laugh
Disadvantages: It's niether scary, well acted or that interesting

...Martin who travels to an asylum for the insane for an interview to work there. With Patrick Magee playing Dr. Rutherford, the man in charge of the asylum after the previous director went crazy, the interview ends up being rather different than expected : Dr Martin can have the job if he can identify the Insane director from 4 patients. Cue a selection of short horror stories as each tells their own tale. The acting is bearable but with horror talents ...
...Robert Block who had previously written the similar film "The House that dripped blood" and the far superior Hitchcock classic Psycho. Amicus had their good films (e.g. Tales from the Crypt ) but unfortunately this isn't in the same league. I found it in a sale at Play for under a fiver (being a fan of classic horror films), and thats about all what its worth. Since buying it about a year or two ago I've only watched it twice. The way it is marketed ...

Killer cats

Advantages: Entertaining, easy to watch
Disadvantages: Hard to take the plot too seriously

...film? I needn't have worried. Black Cat is not without sex and nudity, but it is a very small part of the film and the 'horror' elements are tame compared to, for example, some of the Korean horror films I have seen. Based on a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the film is about killer cats. As such, it almost goes without saying that the plot is a bit daft. Perhaps because I love cats so much myself, I couldn't bring myself to believe what I was seeing ...
...is quite a lot of black humour in the film and this made it very easy to watch. Plus the Englishness of the setting is stressed throughout - I don't know where it was filmed, but it really is picture-perfect, particularly the house in which the Professor lives. Patrick Magee plays the Professor and I thought hammed the role up quite a bit. There were lots of looks of wide-eyed terror that told of the horrors yet to come. This was hardly the role ...

Jolly Music For Such A Nasty Puss

Advantages: A Great Nights Horror Viewing
Disadvantages: One of those films you can only watch the once.

The Black Cat is yet another great Lucio Fulci movie, filmed in both England and Italy it centres around, suprisingly enough a black cat. The film is a reworking of an Edgar Allen Poe story, moved forward to 1980 Middle England. The film is memorable to me for the opening five minutes, a man climbs into his Austin Maxi and heads of down the road, shortly after driving off he realises he is not alone, a homicidal black cat is sitting in the back of ...
...exit from the movie. The black cat then heads off over walls and the roof's of several houses to some rather jolly music. The Cat belongs to a rather unpleasant chap who records the sounds of the dead with a special device attatched to an ordinary microphone which he leaves at the base of a graves headstone. He and the cat do not get on, and the cat expresses this by attacking him several times during the movie. Horror movie fans will be pleased ...
