Generally speaking, the Eighties were not good to the horror film. Films made in this decade were either comedy horror's like evil dead, or films that were designed to make you jump, like nightmare on Elm Street. Most times, films like this were not truly scary. Kirsty's nightmare continues into Hell itself. Advantages: A decent sequel to the original classic. Disadvantages: May be too gorey for some viewers. In Hellraiser 2: Hellbound, Kirsty (Ashley Laurence), wakes in a mental hospital. Having told the police about the night before, (the grisly deaths of her father Larry and her evil stepmother Julia), she has been institutionalised for psychiatric evaluation. In this sequel, Kirsty meets the obsessive Dr. Channard (Kenneth Cranham), who has an unhealthy interest in her story. It is later revealed that he thirsts to experience the pleasures that Hell ... ...institute, the first is a junior psychiatrist who believes in Kirsty, and sincerely wishes to help her. The second is Tiffany, (Imogen Boorman), a mute teenager who has a talent for solving puzzles. Dr Channard eventually gets what he wants, only after resurrecting Kirsty's dead stepmother, Julia (Claire Higgins). Tiffany is used to open the portal to Hell, and they are allowed entry. It can't tear anything apart. Can it? Advantages: Its a bona-fide scary movie. Disadvantages: Too scary? I watched Hellraiser for the first time last night and for a horror-lover like myself, this was long overdue. Perhaps it was down to the fact that i put it off until i could muster a moments peace to dim the lights and watch it alone. This, in hindsight, would prove a harrowing plan. It takes little time in setting the scene and its clear the foundations are being laid bare for the onslaught of sheer terror that ensues. Hellraiser Puzzle Box Advantages: The fist three films plus an extras disc Disadvantages: Very Few, Difficult to fit in my DVD case A must have for any Hellraiser fans, Excellently presented in the 'box', tons of really good extras. Very good special effects for its time with excellent custume design, from the twisted mind of Clive Barker. I personally enjoyed Hellraiser 2 better than the original and the storylines are original, however Hellraiser 3 brings on a new twist to the story (dont forget to see Hellraiser 4: BLOODLINE).
