Reeking of quality or rubbish?

Advantages: Interesting ending...if you get it
Disadvantages: Generally not that memorable

A group of five teenagers are sharing a ride to a party in the desert. On the way, Trip admits that he has a huge stash of ecstasy tablets on him and the driver, Gretchen, who is anti-drugs, tells him he must find another ride - just as well because the dealer Trip stole them from is following him with revenge on his mind. Gretchen agrees to drive him back to a diner where he can arrange another lift...but on arrival, they find the diner is deserted ...
...strange things start to happen - there is a weird smell in the air and very strange people appear and then disappear. What is causing the smell, and who are all the strangers? Will the dealer catch up with Trip? And will any of them survive the experience? As with many horror movies that involve teenagers, few of the characters are very likeable, although there is an attempt to give them more background than most films of this type. Gretchen can ...

Their Thoughts Can Kill

Advantages: Classic Cronenberg horror
Disadvantages: No special features, can be confusing

Scanners is an unusual movie from the now acclaimed director David Cronenberg. Before Cronenberg hit the mainstream his focus was always on horror, shining examples being Shivers and Rabid, both shot in and around Toronto and Montreal, places he considered home. On his first rise of power in the directorial stakes came Scanners, a significantly different horror movie, that seemed dated even from its release. Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) is effectively ...
...so collecting an army of Scanners to do his bidding and get revenge on those who created them. Scientist Dr. Paul Ruth (Patrick McGoohan) has been desperately trying to get to the bottom of Revock's power over other Scanners, and now with Cameron in his care he seeks the opportunity to send him out as a spy and end Revock's rule once and for all. Despite the movie hailing from the very early 1980's there is little to prevent this looking like a ...

Watch watchers

Advantages: still a good story
Disadvantages: unfaithful to the book

This film is loosely based on the book by Dean Koontz. I do mean loosely aswell. Travis Cornell as changed from an EX-DELTA force soldier to a ten year old boy. Travis's mum is the romanic lead in the book. These are little niggles but the film is still good. The story is about a goverment experiment that has gone wrong. It starts off with an explosion at a factory. Two animals escape, one has been bred for intelligence and the other for pure brute ...
...intelligent dog. However on their tale is a psycho federal agent (Michale Ironside) LEM JOHNSON and the viscous animal is never far behind leaving a path of destruction and whenever the animal kills it takes the eyes of its victims. Not faithful to the book, and Dean Koontz felt his book had been murdered. Still a good film, and will make you jump. The effects could have been better but it was a low-budget film, still pleasantly enjoyable. There ...

Dead Gory

Advantages: Well written, tense, black humour, make up and effects, Davina McCall(!)
Disadvantages: Violent and very gory, a little padded in places

...format. 3. Parts of Dead Set are pretty gruesome, so if you’re of a nervous disposition you may not even want to read the rest of this review, never mind follow any of the links at the end. Not Ideal Boyfriend Material How’s this for a nightmare scenario? You’re a lowly female member of the production team on Big Brother. No no, that’s not it. There’s more. Not long ago you were engaged in a passionate clinch with Danny, your new almost-boyfriend, ...
...above scene appears early in Dead Set, a zombie thriller by Charlie Brooker, who writes a humorous column in The Guardian and also writes and presents TV programmes including Screenwipe. The original idea for the story came, surprisingly, from watching an episode of “24”, the American thriller series starring Kiefer Sutherland. In one of his Guardian columns Brooker wrote: "The idea for my TV show Dead Set (in which zombies attack the Big Brother ...

He's Behind You... Again!

Advantages: Funny, scary at times, tension
Disadvantages: Lacks the atmosphere the first film had, unintetionally funny, becomes a bit silly

...crazed Michael Myers did on Halloween of 1978, after trying to kill teenager Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) he seemingly met his end after being shot by his doctor (Donald Pleasance). However when Michael is nowhere to be seen it would seem that Halloween is far from over for Laurie and Doctor Loomis. Laurie is rushed to hospital after her ordeal with Michael whilst Doctor Loomis continues on in his hunt for Michael before more people are made ...
...her at the hospital… Halloween II is a direct sequel to 1978’s Halloween. Halloween II was released in 1981 but was set on the same night back in 1978 straight after Michael is shot. You’d think that three years on there might be some continuity issues but it seemed to me as though Rick Rosenthal had got everything right in this film, even it’s star Jamie Lee Curtis didn’t look as though she’d aged more than a day. If you’re planning on watching ...
