Their Thoughts Can Kill

Advantages: Classic Cronenberg horror
Disadvantages: No special features, can be confusing

Scanners is an unusual movie from the now acclaimed director David Cronenberg. Before Cronenberg hit the mainstream his focus was always on horror, shining examples being Shivers and Rabid, both shot in and around Toronto and Montreal, places he considered home. On his first rise of power in the directorial stakes came Scanners, a significantly different horror movie, that seemed dated even from its release. Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) is effectively ...
...so collecting an army of Scanners to do his bidding and get revenge on those who created them. Scientist Dr. Paul Ruth (Patrick McGoohan) has been desperately trying to get to the bottom of Revock's power over other Scanners, and now with Cameron in his care he seeks the opportunity to send him out as a spy and end Revock's rule once and for all. Despite the movie hailing from the very early 1980's there is little to prevent this looking like a ...

Stunning Swedish Vampire Love Story

Advantages: Fantastic story, brilliant characters, great acting a subtle absorbing love story
Disadvantages: Nothing

Let the right One in has been something of a sleeper hit on the indie scene, a Swedish film about a 12 year old vampire, it sounds in theory a bit soft, but it's not at all. The film begins following the weak incredibly blonde 12 year old Oskar as he plays in front of mirror pretending to stab somebody, the scene is oddly reminiscent of Taxi Drive and De Niro's Travis Bickle in the sense that both are acting out the person they want to be rather ...
...film convinced the author of Let the Right One in, John Ajvide Lindqvist, that Alfredson understood the tone and direction the film needed to go in to make the successful translation to screen. Alfredson's direction is brilliant in this film, he allows the film to pace itself and doesn't set it up with gory killings or other special effects unless they have a real impact on the story. The story is slow paced and character based, the longing shots ...

He's Behind You!

Advantages: Nail-biting tension, excellent villain in Michael
Disadvantages: Drags in the middle, very dated

...and over again. Halloween is rated an 18 however the film doesn’t revolve around gore like the horror films of today do, instead Halloween makes it’s mark by centralising around tension and the sheer terror that Michael Myers brings to the town of Haddonfield. Michael Myers has an eerie onscreen presence, even when he’s not actually in a shot. His presence echoes throughout the film with the use of shadows and reflections that means that even when ...
...of gut wrenching gore however Halloween remains a successful horror film based on the atmosphere that it evokes, it manages to be genuinely frightening without a hint of bloodshed to be seen. This is a really jumpy film and there are many unexpected (and expected) moments throughout which leave the film understandably predictable but the journey is very unpredictable. It’s one of those films where you find yourself shouting at the scream, urging ...

The Last House on the Left (2009)

Advantages: Great at building suspence, Brilliant Story, Great acting
Disadvantages: 1 intense scene, may not be suitable for all.

...thing I knew about The Last House on the Left was that it was a thriller or horror (or both) simply by the look of its cover. Picking this film was possibly one of the better decisions I have ever made for a Halloween film (a film to watch on Halloween) unlike last year when I watched The Shining, but let’s not get off topic. I found that it is best going into this film not knowing what is going to happen or as little as possible about the storyline, ...
...place (hence the name The Last House On the Left). The daughter, Mari Collingwood (Sara Paxton) after persuading her parents, goes out taking the families only car to see her friend Paige (Martha MacIsaac), who is into smoking weed and drinking, unlike Mari, who has given up the teenager life to become a professional swimmer. The pair meets another teenager at random who they court stealing and promises than “the best weed ever”, and they eventually ...

Being Stalked By A Demon... Chilling Docu-Horror

Advantages: Fascinating story, great acting... feels 'real'.
Disadvantages: The atmosphere and 'feel' of the movie is somewhat bland.

...and the sleepless nights and paranormal activity take their toll on Katie who begins to fall behind in her school work, and Micah, who is a day trader, loses money he can ill afford to lose. When Katie wakes up screaming in the night because of horrific nightmares, Micah’s fascination gives way to concern… which grows all the more when Katie is caught on camera sleepwalking. ‘Paranormal Activity’ the brainchild of Oren Peli, was filmed entirely ...
...back in 2006 and cost just under £9,000.00… in its first weekend at the cinema in the US, it pushed ‘Saw VI’ from first position and although it was knocked to second position by the arrival of Michael Jackson’s ‘This Is It’, the film grossed over £50 million [to date] which now makes it the highest grossing horror movie of the year. Wow… what a return on £9,000.00 and 2 days of work! Having had the opportunity to view this movie over the weekend ...
