28 Days Later ... the infected are here!

Advantages: Frity British horror film
Disadvantages: None

***Why I watched 28 days later*** As I true horror fan I always try to watch new film releases. Unfortunately for me my partner does not share my enthusiasm so most of the time I only end up watching the film when they are released on dvd. I love the original zombie style horrors so when I read a review about a new British post-apocalyptic horror film by director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, The Beach) I flew down to the video shop to rent it. ***The ...
...learns that during the last 28 days he has slept through the effects of the 'rage' virus. The highly contagious infection seems to have spread quickly because it is spread through blood and renders a victim helpless within seconds, leaving them as deadly killer, referred to as 'the infected'. Unable to take in recent events Jim is desperate to get home to his parents, but Selena and Mark do not want to leave the sanctury of their hideout. After deciding ...

Confusing and ridiculous.

Advantages: Actors, set, period costumes
Disadvantages: Everything else

The storyline to this film is bizare. Basically there is an isolated village which looks to be set a hundred or so years ago, even though the film is set quite recently. The whole village is surrounded by a wood, and everyone in it believes that the wood is filled with terrible creatures who will not allow them to enter. The viewer later finds out that the whole thing is a giant lie made up by some technology hating old people in an attempt to create ...
...a no-fly zone around it. The film also tries, and fails, to perform a temporary 'the creatures are real' twist involving a mentally retarded man stealing one of the costumes and attacking a blind woman. The special effects were hit and miss, the village set and costumes were impressive, but when you saw the creatures for the first time they were quite obviously men in costumes, with their warning to the villagers being red paint on some doors in ...

A PLACID HORROR

Advantages: Short and funny
Disadvantages: Not really scary or original

...Film Only Review Lake Placid tells the typical story of a small town plagued by an under water killer, but, is given a new look by the fact that this small town is located in the mountains, not the beach, making it very difficult for a shark to give them problems. However the killer I mention is not a shark, but a crocodile, and a big, big one to that. Lake Placid has to a witty script, by David E. Kelley , that contains some wonderfully twisted ...
...not the towns mysterious deaths can be related to a bear or a crocodile, when suddenly a bear comes charging out of the woods, before being eaten whole by the giant croc. Oh the hilarious, totally unoriginal sense of Irony. This sense of humour is something that runs through the script. Even the characters are a quirky, unique lot that you wouldn't trust to protect a field, let alone an entire town, and thankfully the cast have done perfectly in ...

Zombies walk not run

Advantages: top brit film
Disadvantages: none

...permanent state murderous rage. Within 28 days the whole of the country is overwhelmed and a handful of survivors begin their attempt to salvage a future life, little realising that the deadly virus is not the only thing in the country threatens them. So when Jim(Murphy) Awakes from a coma to find a desolate London he wonders around looking for people picking up the endless amount of money and canned soft drinks that aligned the streets, until ...
...with the infected which results in Jim cracking a priest around the head with a bagful of canned drinks, From there he is saved by 2 saviours who then proceed to take Jim to look for his dead parents with disastrous effects. Who will survive whilst on the run? Will They find salvation? Who will they meet? And will they be nice? My opinion – This is not a zombie film pure and simple I know it gets lumped into that genre but it is not this is ...

I! AM! BEOWULF!

Advantages: Anthony Hopkins
Disadvantages: CGI.

...but I digress... Beowulf uses a technique wherein CGI is pasted over and mixed in with live action footage. Original, yet massively over-ambitious. The graphics werent generally well-received, as the public has come to associate CGI characters with childrens' movies. Not to mention that CGI itself is only in its adolescent state. However, it could not have acheived its impressibe battle scenes without the technique, the most memorable being the one ...
...conveniently placed objects and furniture obscuring Beowulf's genitalia in a highly comedic fashion. The film has, to all intents and purposes stuck to the text, with its landscapes mirroring perfectly, the imagery of the book. I was surprised to see excessive bloodletting in this film, as it is not what I have come to associate with CGI-based movies. Nonetheless, there is plenty of it. Although in terms of entertainment, the level of gore pales ...
