Embrace the rejects, hope you've got the patience!
Advantages: Has a certain appeal, doesn't shy away Disadvantages: Some dodgy camera work, acting and FX
...guru/buff/cult director Rob Zombie saw the success of his debut feature length film House of 1,000 Corpses, he must have thought 'Sequel, here we come!' straight away. Definitely not for everyone, and criticised by many, it was also hailed as a hit by many due to the gruesome nature and the almost B-movie style of directing it adopted.
Enter this sequel, dragging with it a number of the characters from the first film, and keeping up the trends with ... ...film, although some of the more basic plot lines in this film could 'spoil' the first, if such a thing was feasible.
It sort of has two parts to it, kicking off with five unsuspecting members of a touring music group holed up in a motel room, who are held captive in the room by a pair of sadistic siblings, Otis and Baby Firefly, fresh from the first film. What strikes straight away is the sheer lack of care factor for human feelings or physical ...

Blood red and violent as hell
Advantages: Gory, troubling, difficult, acomplished Disadvantages: If you don't like horror this ain't the film for you...
...is a light leap from the original. The first film was filled with MTV style jump cuts, a punishing and at times banal sound track and repeated shocks. Towards the end of the film it did manage a truly strange atmosphere and was something slightly different, but overall has to been seen as a failure.
All this changes with The Devil's Rejects. Based on the exploits of a twisted and violent family the film throws away much of the story from the original ... ...Basically cut in two halves, the film spends the first part establishing how violent and unpleasant the family are - and does it with a blood drenched sequence of vignettes that leave everyone cold. When I watched the film in the cinema I'd never seen so many people leave. For perhaps the first time since the seventies we see a real sense of sexual violence on the screen and it's very hard to watch. By the time the family make it to their supposed ...

Zombie Heaven, Shopping Hell
Advantages: Probably one of the best zombie films ever made. Disadvantages: Occasional lapses in acting but I say 'embrace them and rejoice'.
...eat you.
Dawn of the Dead is always going to hold a special place in my heart, and not just because it keeps things in perspective for me when the entire human race seems intent on throwing themselves into my path and lingering there with intent. I first saw it when I was a kid and it's been in my conciousness ever since. It's the winning combination of eerily cheerful music, black humour, sharp social commentary, and the best collection of individualistic ... ...opinion will always criticise this film for its grainy amateur appearance and cast, but I am of the opinion that this is part of what makes this film so special, part of why it can get under your skin and linger in the memory so long. In a sea of recent CGI-riddled horror productions that are here today, forgotten tommorow, a film that has clearly been lovingly hand-crafted has shambled through the test of time and eaten the competition. Priceless. ...

Dawn of the Dead (Uncut)
Advantages: Extended runtime, previously deleted material restored Disadvantages: Not widescreen
Although this is not mainstream viewing it is certainly one of the all time greats in terms of horror and "The Daddy" of the Zombie genre. Forget the trashy European movies such as "Flesh Eaters", if you want out and out shocks, choose the George Romero films and certainly this as a benchmark of those that followed. The 2004 remake is an excellent film but if you haven't seen this then I highly recommend it. The plot is very good, as is the acting ... ...Romero is an absolute genius as Director. The excellent Special effects are by his long time cohort Tom Savini (no CGI in those days) who also acts in the film as the leader of a gang of Hell's Angels. The Music by Goblin is also at times atmospheric and chilling.
The film opens in a television studio where the remaining staff are broadcasting the whereabouts of Rescue stations to whoever is watching and it is obvious from the outset that society ...
