Trick or Treat?
Review of Halloween (Box Set) by
bilbob20
Advantages: The John Carpenter original, and H20
Disadvantages: The Curse storyline
...the film takes place on Halloween 1978, 15 years after a 6 year old killed his sister. The madman has now escaped from the asylum, donned a creepy mask, and headed back to the town of the original horror. Jamie Lee Curtis is Laurie Strode, the resourceful teenager who is stalked over the course of Halloween night by the masked man. Donald Pleasance turns up as an eerie doctor who has to try and bring Myers in alive. The performances are above average ... ...a scene from the original Halloween that subtly plays on a screen in a bar. It wasn't long before Michael returned though. After spending 10 years in a coma, he is now waking up for Halloween. After all, he wont be happy til everybody in his family is dead. We still dont know why though. What we do find out here is that Laurie Strode died in a car crash, and has left a child who now lives with over protective foster parents. She knows nothing about ...

The Hammer Collection Box Set
Review of The Hammer Collection (Box Set) by
spacavoy
Advantages: An aesthetically pleasing collection
Disadvantages: Some rather poor inclusions
...of classic Hammer films from the very good to...not so good. An aesthetically pleasing set for fans of the studio, or those wanting at least half of the titles. Features star favourites Peter Cushing, Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress and Christopher Lee (about whom there is an interesting documentary with 'Scars of Dracula').
The extra features vary greatly, the biggest ommission, in my opinion, is the total absence of subtitles for the hearing impaired.
... ...some for the first time, and completely uncut.
My personal favourite was the inclusion of the 1965 film 'The Nanny' which stars a very chilling Bette Davis in a well scripted, and often overlooked role.
Probably a tad overpriced for most, but new DVD versions of individual films are also available, so take a look at some of those if you don't want to commit yourself to a full collection. ...

This game confused me somewhat.
Review of Saw 4 DVD by
sumara
Advantages: Lots of gore and makes you think and figure things out.
Disadvantages: You need to watch it more than once to get all the details.
...is set out similarly to Saw 2 with the non-linnear time line that is greatly effective and adds to the wow factor. My favourite thing about this film is the sickness behind it, these films are not based on some psycho plucked from real life, its an everyday guy fantasising about how he'd exact revenge if given the chance. And he does it so well. ...

The Original Driller Killer
Review of Frightmare by
sghawken
Advantages: Pretty scary for a british movie
Disadvantages: Poor acting
...to be subjected too.
Frightmare begins as it means to go on with the death of onetime Fawlty Towers star Andrew Sachs, killed after a visit to a funfair to see a clairvoyant. This opening scene was a shot in colour but later turned to black and white because the vision of gore you see was just too much for that moment in time. This event sees the condemning to prison of an unknown party, and at this point the movie moves forward from the 1950's ... ...Walker movies of this time, Frightmare offers the most striking vision with some of the worst acting. The memories of Frightmare really stayed with me for years after seeing it, and were given a stark reminder when I made my most recent return to this horror movie as part of a self imposed Pete Walker season.
The story of Frightmare is incredibly slow moving, but this is not a criticism; because this slow delivery makes the terror at the end all ...

Wow, what can one say about such a masterpiece, it could really be a center piece for all the other masters of horror out there.
