Their Thoughts Can Kill

Advantages: Classic Cronenberg horror
Disadvantages: No special features, can be confusing

Scanners is an unusual movie from the now acclaimed director David Cronenberg. Before Cronenberg hit the mainstream his focus was always on horror, shining examples being Shivers and Rabid, both shot in and around Toronto and Montreal, places he considered home. On his first rise of power in the directorial stakes came Scanners, a significantly different horror movie, that seemed dated even from its release. Cameron Vale (Stephen Lack) is effectively ...
...so collecting an army of Scanners to do his bidding and get revenge on those who created them. Scientist Dr. Paul Ruth (Patrick McGoohan) has been desperately trying to get to the bottom of Revock's power over other Scanners, and now with Cameron in his care he seeks the opportunity to send him out as a spy and end Revock's rule once and for all. Despite the movie hailing from the very early 1980's there is little to prevent this looking like a ...

Brundelfly

Advantages: 2 films on one disc
Disadvantages: The second film

The fly is a beautiful film. Amid wasting flesh and vomit, we actually see the breakdown of a passionate love between two people, one of whom must watch the one they love dying in front of them. It gets worse as we see Jeff Goldblum become insane as the insect takes over 'go, I'll hurt you if you stay' is simply a heartbreaking line. Here is a man who knows that very soon he will be no longer a man and he will end up hurting the one he loves. As ...
...and their unborn child. Knowing the one she loves is gone, she accepts that it must end. Despite its grisly moments (and there are some really grisly moments) this film is superbly shot. It is always dark, run down, squalid. The film centres around a minimal cast, forcing us to take in every part of their lives and weaknesses. We watch the love story unfold like voyuers and we watch the transformation, each scene becomming more desperate. I am a ...

"He Must Be Stopped While We Still Can!"

Advantages: A gripping rollercoaster of a movie from start to finish
Disadvantages: None

In 1982 while filming the movie Scanners, director David Cronenberg found a little known Stephen King novel called The Dead Zone in his trailer. He immediately became fascinated with the tale which in ways ran parallel to his latest project. He knew that if anyone was going to turn The Dead Zone into a movie that he was the man to do it. Johnny Smith lived a normal life as a teacher in a small Maine town called Castle Rock. For several years he ...
...be quite badly damaged through the accident; however he has suffered from what seems to be no major wounds. Try as he might he cannot get his legs to work; but a visit by his parents darkens the situation further. It transpires that not only was Johnny indeed seriously injured but he has been in a coma for over five years. His life is now very different and the one that he loved more than any other has gone on to marry another man. As Johnny struggles ...

Revenge of the Killer Midgets

Advantages: It's very odd and rather eerie
Disadvantages: Borderline silly

...daughter, she is admitted into the care of a renowned psychiatrist, Dr Hal Raglan. Dr Raglan's methods are unconventional, to say the least. Tapping into the disturbed psyche of his patients, Dr Raglan uses a pioneering effect that encourages his patients to manifest their psychological problems in a more physical manner. In front of an astounded audience, for example, Dr Raglan is able to coerce the suffering from one of his patients into sores ...
...scratches and bruises all over the girl's body. Unable to prevent the man from barring his wife from seeing the girl, Dr Raglan pleads with Frank to allow his wife to continue seeing the girl, but he refuses to listen and instead enlists the support of his mother-in-law and one of his daughter's teachers to help him look after the girl. One evening, delighted to be of assistance to the unfortunate man, Frank's mother-in-law is contentedly babysitting ...

Pray you don't have to see it

Advantages: I found the film I meant at last
Disadvantages: It still hadn't improved that much

...cast, directors and the usual. Rabid was made in 1977 and is known as one of David Cronenberg’s masterpieces. David Cronenberg’s also known for such films as The Dead Zone (Christopher Walken, not the TV series), Videodrone but most famously for The Fly (Staring Jeff Goldblum). Its running time is 91 minutes long and in the UK was rated an 18, meaning it is unsuitable for anyone under the age of 18 years old to watch. The film doesn’t contain sex, ...
...I bought my copy of Rabid at Blockbusters for £5.99 A nice reasonable price really for a DVD that’s not *that* bad.
