Bubba Ho-Tep review
Advantages: Original story, good chemistry between the actors Disadvantages: None
Bubba Ho-Tep is a comedy horror movie directed by Don Coscarelli (who also directed all four "Phantasm" films) and stars the legend that is Bruce Campbell!
Campbell plays Elvis, the actual, real Elvis. It seems he switched places with a look-alike (also played by Campbell) because he got bored of all the glitz and glamour and wanted to get back to his roots. Unfortunately the contract he drew up was destroyed and he had an accident that threw out ... ...back, and now spends his day in an old folk's home. He teams up with Jack (Ossie Davis), a fellow resident who believes that he is John F. Kennedy and that his skin was dyed black. Together they investigate the recent spate of deaths in their home, and find out it may be to do with an ancient Egyptian mummy, as you do. As no-one else believes them these two old codgers have to take on the entity themselves, regardless of their capabilities.
A good ...

The Tall Man is coming!
Advantages: It comes in a cool "phantasm sphere", which contains four good films - and a bonus disc! Disadvantages: This series may not be for your run-of-the-mill horror fan - it's a cult type of series!
A. Michael Baldwin plays a kid who suspects something is up at the local cemetary - he goes to investigate and finds all kinds of weird things going on in the mortuary at the hands of the Tall Man (Angus Scrimm).
As the series goes on he grows up and tries time after time to escape the Tall Man and try and stop his evil plans for world domination, and avoid death at the hands of "THE SPHERE".
A. Michael Baldwin is replaced in the second film by ...

In its own way a horror classic
Advantages: Great locations, dreamlike narrative, great villain, memorable characters Disadvantages: Lame effects (for the most part), looks dated
...of the modern horror film.
Phantasm has a lot going for it - a truly memorable villain (the eponymous Tall man), decent characters (with the best being the king of one liners - Ice cream salesman, Reggie Bannister - as himsel), great settings ( a mausoleum) and enough gore to satisfy gore hounds). All of this, combined with a dream like narrative and frequent (sometimes highly confusing) plot twists, add up to a highly enjoyable horror outing. Of ... ...young director (Don Coscarelli) and was made in the late 70s, there are some plot holes, bad acting and lame effects. In my opinion however, this adds to the enjoyment factor of the film and puts many (if not all) modern efforts to shame.
All in all one of my favourite horror films from the golden era of true horror and infinitely superior to most of the sequels (except II)
