Welcome to the Monster Club...

Advantages: Vincent Price and a wonderful cast of horror actors. The Ghoul section is excellent.
Disadvantages: The Monster Club members are in the most part ridiculously unconvincing.

The last decent Horror Anthology produced in the Hammer/Amicus style. Price, Carradine & Pleasance brought together as if to say farewell to the old ways of making horror films. THE FILM From 'Sword & Sorcery' (the makers of Hawk the Slayer), and Roy Ward Baker, the Director of A Night To Remember (1958), Quatermass and the Pit (1967), and Scars of Dracula (1970) came THE MONSTER CLUB (1980), a Jack Gill presented Chips Production, produced by ...
...The Monster Club is a Horror Anthology in the same vein as Dr. Terror's House Of Horrors, From Beyond The Grave, Tales From the Crypt and the Ward Baker directed and Subotsky produced Asylum and Vault of Horror. In many ways it marked the end of the whole British Horror film industry which began with Hammer and later encompassed Amicus, Tyburn and Tigon. Made arond the same time as its cult 'Sword & Sorcery' bed-fellow Hawk The Slayer, it's another ...

Truly a classic of horror/sci-fi.

Advantages: Enjoyably silly plot.
Disadvantages: Need to be a lover of the horror/sci-fi genres.

...par for Hammer Horror. Professor Quatermass himself (Andrew Keir) and the very easy-on-the-eye Barbara Judd (Barbara Shelley) stand out and provide very believable performances. This is impressive in a plot which requires a very healthy dose of "suspension of disbelief". Even with special effects limited by the age of the filming and an obviously tiny budget this manages to be worth a watch at least once by lovers of the two genres. Give it a go. ...

A vampire classic

Advantages: Characters, sets, atmosphere, score, made with good taste
Disadvantages: None

First film in the great Karnstein trilogy, followed by a flawed little masterpiece Lust for a vampire (1970) and wonderful Twins of evil (1971) , The Vampire lovers is based on (Joseph) Sheridan LeFanu´s 1872 vampire novella Carmilla. Written by Tudor Gates from the story by the producers Michael Fine and Harry Style, The Vampire lovers is set in early 19th century Styria and it follows lesbian vampire beauty Mircalla Karnstein (Polish-born Ingrid ...
...daughters. Peter Cushing plays the revenge-minded father and Madeline Smith has equally impressive role than Pitt as the wide-eyed, innocent heroine with reddish hair and pretty negligees. This elegant, richly Gothic vampire romance has wonderful sets of mansions, castles and graveyards, natural but strong colours of Hammer Studios´1970´s Technicolour, and some very mild nudity. One of the bes films from Hammer Studios and much, much better than ...

Amicus boxed set

Advantages: Good films, quite entertaining, a must for Hammer horror fans
Disadvantages: poor quality packaging even though it looks good

The Amicus Boxed set is a wonderful Collectors piece for any vintage horror fan. I particularly appreciate the shape of the box, although it is difficult to put on a shelf with other DVDs it is also a bit awkward to open and the CDs fall out. Which is really annoying. . The Boxed set includes: ...And now the screaming starts An extremely gothic film in which a virgin bride is brought ancestral home of a family with a curse upon it. The bride is ...
...stories in one format, as The mysterious Doctor Terror boards a train and tells the begins to read the tarot cards of the other 5 people in the train compartment. This film is definitive of Amicus style of film If you watch one watch this one. The House that dripped blood Another of Amicus multiple stories in one films the pretext is an investigator interviews the custodian of an old house and is told of the fates of its previous tenants. The star-studded ...

Little plastic robots? Just stamp on them

Advantages: It's cheap, silly, and will make you laugh
Disadvantages: It's niether scary, well acted or that interesting

...Martin who travels to an asylum for the insane for an interview to work there. With Patrick Magee playing Dr. Rutherford, the man in charge of the asylum after the previous director went crazy, the interview ends up being rather different than expected : Dr Martin can have the job if he can identify the Insane director from 4 patients. Cue a selection of short horror stories as each tells their own tale. The acting is bearable but with horror talents ...
...Robert Block who had previously written the similar film "The House that dripped blood" and the far superior Hitchcock classic Psycho. Amicus had their good films (e.g. Tales from the Crypt ) but unfortunately this isn't in the same league. I found it in a sale at Play for under a fiver (being a fan of classic horror films), and thats about all what its worth. Since buying it about a year or two ago I've only watched it twice. The way it is marketed ...
