Creepy as Hell
Advantages: Superb musical score, hugely atmospheric, powerfully unsettling, simple but effective plot Disadvantages: None
...of tension and suspense. In the hands of a lesser director, The Fog would have been just another generic horror film, (see the execrable 2005 remake if you don't believe me) but Carpenter instead manages to create an oppressive and unsettling film with his mix of eerily-lit shots, brooding off-screen menace and his trademark pulsing synths that ebb and flow throughout, gradually building up anxiety in the viewer on an almost subconscious level. The ... ...beacon and driving it onto the rocks, causing crew to drown before plundering the ship of gold and using it to establish the town. The local church houses a huge gold crucifix fashioned from the supposedly ill-gotten gold, and its curator, Father Malone, is a descendent to the head conspirator and town founder. On the hundredth anniversary of the shipwrecking a strange luminous fog begins to envelop the town, and strange figures with glowing eyes ...

Why not six, Blake? Why not me?
Advantages: Timeless, classic horror tale Disadvantages: Sadly a wasted Blu-ray release on some levels
Of all the many movies I have seen (believe me I’ve seen a lot) John Carpenter’s The Fog is probably the film I have seen the most. Released in the UK in the early 1980’s The Fog is a horror tale so cleverly delivered that almost 30 years after it was made it still looks as fantastic as it did then. In the small town of Antonio Bay the residents are preparing for the 100th anniversary of their home. For 99 years all has been quiet in the community, ... ...be turned upside down; while the town celebrates Father Malone (Hal Holbrook) an original township descendant exposes a terrible secret about the history of their home, they are not only celebrating the anniversary of their homes, but also the fact that their ancestors were responsible for a terrible crime. On the back of two very successful low budget features (Halloween and Assault On Precinct 13) The Fog was the opportunity for director John Carpenter ...

Perhaps it's time to leave town?
Advantages: Some genuine chills, good story, good soundtrack. Disadvantages: Weak writing, some 'iffy' performances.
...directed by John Carpenter (Halloween, The Thing, Assault on Precint 13, Starman). It stars Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, John Houseman, Janet Leigh and Hal Halbrook.
It begins with a eerie story told around a campfire by an old and grizzled sailor to a group of young children. The story is of a ship, the Elizabeth Dane, which sank a hundred years ago just off their small Californian town, Antonio Bay. As the film begins the town is just getting ... ...happening in the Bay and Father Malone (Hal Holbrook) has just discovered a rather unsavoury secret about the towns forefathers that puts a grisly spin on the festivities...
This film suffers a bit from splitting the main action between two heroines. Stevie Wayne (Adrienne Barbeau) is the owner of a radio station and mother of a young son Andy (Ty Mitchell). She hosts the station's nighttime show and is witness to a mysterious glowing fog that appears ...

Classic werewolf film
Advantages: Story and special effects Disadvantages: none
The John Landis film, An American Werewolf in London, is an iconic film that has achieved cult status over the years.
This film is about two American college students, David Kessler and Jack Goodman, who whilst backpacking in England, encounter a werewolf who vicious attacks them, killing Jack but it is killed before David is killed as well. David wakes up in a hospital in London but starts to suffer terrible nightmares of his dead friend Jack, ... ...Sergeant McManus
This is an excellent film that has a brilliant story. The story is quite simple but features some great dialogue and quirky special effects. The cast is not exactly full of big stars but John Landis, who wrote and directed this film has managed to get some brilliant performances from the cast. The transformation of David into the werewolf is quite impressive and well done. The scene at the start of the film is very eerie and very ...
