Classic werewolf film

Advantages: Story and special effects
Disadvantages: none

The John Landis film, An American Werewolf in London, is an iconic film that has achieved cult status over the years. This film is about two American college students, David Kessler and Jack Goodman, who whilst backpacking in England, encounter a werewolf who vicious attacks them, killing Jack but it is killed before David is killed as well. David wakes up in a hospital in London but starts to suffer terrible nightmares of his dead friend Jack, ...
...Sergeant McManus This is an excellent film that has a brilliant story. The story is quite simple but features some great dialogue and quirky special effects. The cast is not exactly full of big stars but John Landis, who wrote and directed this film has managed to get some brilliant performances from the cast. The transformation of David into the werewolf is quite impressive and well done. The scene at the start of the film is very eerie and very ...

April Fools Day (1986) Getting straight down to it, what we have here is a generic watch them die one by one teen stalker type film. The early to mid eighties were packed full of them. In essence April Fools Day is no different, even to the point of having another similar film with the same title released in the same year. Luckily they ended up using the weaker aka of Slaughter High (probably due to release dates), which is a gift as April Fools ...
...take the ferry over on April Fools and partake in numerous pranks, high jinks and japery. But there are some so called pranks that no one will admit to and have an unnerving sinister quality, and Muffy’s Mansion (a possible sequel title for all you would be cashing in producers) itself has a spooky quality. As time progresses, people start to disappear, of course we get to see what happens to them in all its glorious detail (sort of – more later), ...

The Amityville Escapade

Advantages: Makes you jump now and again
Disadvantages: That little annoying child

So it is coming it the season of Hallowe'en were we all try and scare ourselves and more especially younger relatives into a coma. In keeping with this line of thinking I bought I few horror DVDs the other day and last night decided to start with watching this one. It seemed to be the meekest I'd seen the 2005 remake and I've also reviewed one of its crappy sequels so I wasn't expecting too much. STORY The story involves the Lutz family. George ...
...and moves into the Amityville home with her as it is cheep due to the fact a young man went mad there before and ended up killing his whole family because the voice in the houses told him too. Anyway, the first sign things aren't so sweet and shiny come about when Rod Steiger appears as a priest to bless the house. The family are all out in the garden and inside alone he starts to get afraid and feel sick, swarms of flies appear and he flees the ...

Fact can be scarier than fiction...

Advantages: Classic horror. Easy to find in the shops and on-line
Disadvantages: Can seem a little dated and cheesy these days

This 1979 film is the apparently "true" story of the Lutz family and the nightmare they endured when they moved into what they thought would be their dream home. I haven't seen the new re-make but the family have distanced themselves from it, saying "it's not our story". They haven't taken too kindly to the change in family set up or the sub-plots and I can't say I blame them. However, even the original film doesn't depict quite what happened. But ...
...them that a year earlier the house had been the scene of some murders or that the place is built on an Indian burial ground. It's not long before it's obvious something is wrong. The house is clearly haunted. However, even toilets spurting black slime, and flies covering windows and blood pouring from walls doesn't make the family move out. This is rather unbelievable! And it's not surprising really - the real George Lutz said the bloody walls incident ...

The Amityville Horror

Advantages: Excellent storyline
Disadvantages: None

I watched this movie for the first time last week, and to be honest supernatural stories tend to be unrealistic to me, and therefore i thought i would not enjoy it. However, this movie had some excellent moments and was generally believable. I was gripped by the storyline, even more so as it is based on true events. The roof scene(i wont go into any more detail incase you want to watch/buy it) is amazing, and very frightening. I was particularly ...
