Thank god I could never solve a rubik's cube!!!
Advantages: cheap, atmospheric, terrifying Disadvantages: starting to look a little dated
WE WILL TEAR YOUR SOUL APART!!!! Generally speaking, the Eighties were not good to the horror film. Films made in this decade were either comedy horror's like evil dead, or films that were designed to make you jump, like nightmare on Elm Street. Most times, films like this were not truly scary. More often than not, it was the orchestral soundtrack that made you jump, rather than a particularly scary plot or effect. There were, however, occasional ... ...possible to pull the proverbial needle from the Eighties haystack. One such needle, is Clive Barker's directorial debut, Hellraiser. Barker was not well known. Previously he had written three short horror storybooks called the 'Books of blood'. Although highly enjoyable in their own right, they are more notable for the quote that was published on the front cover. " I have seen the future of horror, and his name is Clive Barker ". When Something like ...

big budget horror turns into low budget rubbish
Advantages: none Disadvantages: thrown together
The first Creepshow film - based on the old Weird Tales/EC Comics of the 50's - was a big budget all star anthology film. It was a collaboration between George A Romero and Stephen King (who even starred in one of the stories) and had stars like Ted Danson, Leslie Nielsen, Ed Harris.
This one has no stars - no decent director but surprisingly a screenplay from George A Romero and the last segment The Raft actually written by King (who I dont rate ... ...The stories are basic and bland - the first one has a Wooden Red Indian that you see outside US stores in films like this, coming to life to kill those who robbed and killed the storeowner, the 2nd, The Raft, has a group of generic teens terrorised by a black blob that looks like oil slick whilst sunning themselves on a raft in a lake and the final one is a rip off of an old Hammer House of Horror story from their 70's magazine - hit and run driver ...

Best take on Vampire legend since "Nosferatu"
Advantages: Brilliant reworking of mythos, strong acting, visuals and music Disadvantages: Ending a little sudden
...wolves or bats or fog. Near Dark managed to make vampires more human, more realistic and in doing so, a damn sight more scary.
Caleb (Adrian Padsar) lives on a sprawling farm in the American mid-west with his Father, Loy (Tim Thomerson) and his much younger sister Sarah (Marcy Leeds). Out cruising one night, he runs into Mae (Jenny Wright). A girl most certainly not from around there and by strict definition to the bored farmer, incredibly interesting. ... ...period finally run out?
Near Dark's strengths lie not only in the quality of the acting or the characters and their motives, but also in the whole Vampire thing. There is no mention of the word in the entire film, the vamps themselves never grow large canines or levitate. When they choose their victims, they dominate them with their superior strength or trick them into helplessness or simply shoot them dead. When they feed, they crunch through skin ...

House 2: The Second Story (1987)
Once you’ve gotten over the wonderfully descriptive subtitle, you might later realise that this has nothing to do with the original film and is in fact just a second story about a house. Jesse and his girlfriend Kate move into the house where his parents were killed many years ago. A spooky introduction sequence gives you a few details of these events. On the mantle piece is an unusual skull ornament that catches ... ...episode of The Rugrats.
House 2 is so tame, inoffensive and derivative, with scenes of extended peril, a 12a certificate would be more appropriate - as that seems to be the main criteria. Admittedly it never looked to be any good, but nothing could prepare me for such a pointlessly inane churning out of comedy and, lets say, fantasy clichés. Avoid at all costs. Rated: 15
