Old Style Horror

Advantages: Good story and great look
Disadvantages: Might be a bit tame for today's gore fest lovers

...to talk about one of the all time great horror stars Vincent Price. His career spanned many decades from studio actor in the 30's, 40's to film baddie in the 50's and to being the star of many horror films in the 60's and 70's. Many will remember him as the voiceover in the famous 'Thriller' video by Michael Jackson or more recently playing the creator of Edward Scissorhands, one of his last roles. The 60's was probably his best creative period ...
...These included 'The Fall Of The House of Usher' (1960), 'The Pit and the Pendulum' (1961), 'The Tomb of Ligeia' (1965) and 'The Raven' (1963). Apart from being directed by Corman and starring Price what connects all these films is that they are all adaptations of Edgar Allan Poe stories. 'The Masque of the Red Death' made in 1964 continued this trend and is probably the best of the collaborations between Price and Corman. THE STORY "The "Red Death" ...

THE BEST kIND OF SADISM

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

Gore auteur Hershell Gordon Lewis' "Brigadoon"-like "2000 Maniacs" is quite a lot of fun. The tale involves 6 Yankee tourists lured into the town of Pleasant Valley, which sort of resembles Andy Griffith's Mayberry. They are hailed as guests of honor for the town's centennial celebration, but are never told exactly what their roles are to be in the proceedings. It's the best kind of sadism, the sort where you can actually picture Lewis sitting around, ...
...up THIS time? Rolled down a hill in a barrel with nails pounded into it? A carnival-style "dunking game" that involves a boulder instead of the usual pool of water? Sure!!" The film is at its most successful when it actually causes you to wince, not even so much during the murder scenes, but through the scenes in which the townsfolk have to cajole and coerce their victims into taking part in the festivities. Besides the campy drive-in value of this ...

Ventriloquism for Dummies

Advantages: Quite entertaining and enjoyable in its way
Disadvantages: Cheap and a bit silly (though that can be an advantage if you like cheap and silly)

Starring: Bryant Haliday as The Great Vorelli Yvonne Romain as Marianne Horn William Sylvester ... Mark English This 1964 low-budget English horror film tells the tale of a ventriloquist whose dummy has a life of its own. I know there have been many movies on that same theme and, well, this is yet another one – however, this is one of the earliest ones, before the theme became so totally hackneyed. I find ventriloquist’s dummies with a life of their ...
...sat down to watch this film. The Great Vorelli, a dapper-looking older gentleman sporting a fine full Van Dyke beard as seems to often be the case with such characters in the 50s and early 60s, is a successful stage hypnotist and ventriloquist who performs with a dummy called Hugo which bears a disturbing resemblance to Michael Jackson. We start by seeing Vorelli taking a bow to tumultuous applause as he departs the stage at the end of his act (mercifully, ...

Death Note (デスノート, Desu NÅto?) is a series of two live-action Japanese films released in 2006 and based on the Death Note manga and anime series by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. The films primarily center on a university student who decides to rid the world of evil with the help of a supernatural notebook that kills anyone whose name is written in it. The two films were directed by ShÅ«suke Kaneko, produced by Nippon Television, and distributed ...
...as the "Death Note". The Death Note's instructions claim that if a person's name is written within it while picturing that person's face, that person shall die. Light is initially skeptical of the notebook's authenticity, but after experimenting with it, he realizes that the Death Note is real. Soon he is visited by the Note's original owner, a shinigami named Ryuk. After that meeting, Light seeks to become "the God of the New World" by passing his ...
