Movies For Halloween - The Haunting

Advantages: Complex, intelligent, layered, endlessly rewarding...
Disadvantages: Jan de Bont saw it one time. No good came of that.

Robert Wise's 1963 The Haunting is, I'll go ahead and announce right here and now, one of my favourite films of all time. Complex, intelligent, layered, beautifully shot, wittily written - whatever one's criteria for judging the merits of these things, The Haunting meets it, shortly before scaring the very pores out the skin... The tale, based on Shirley Jackson's The Haunting Of Hill House, concerns an experiment conducted in the house in question, ...
...the legitimacy or otherwise of the myriad of legends concerning supernatural activity therein. He enlists a handful of volunteers to assist him, principle amongst them being Julie Harris' Eleanor Lance, a woman still riddled with guilt following the recent death of her invalid mother. Throughout the course of the experiment, the secrets of Hill House are revealed to them and to us via a series of increasingly unsettling set-pieces - the thumping ...

The First Gore Film!

Advantages: Broke cinema history into a totally new genre
Disadvantages: Not enough others like this one

...personally own the trilogy of blood which has the next two sequels to this movie, and I think anyone who actually enjoys this film should consider grabbing the other two in the series ("Two Thousand Maniacs" and "Color Me Blood Red"). These films are NOT for people who gross-out easily. They are pretty nasty to behold, but they are redeeming in the fact that they are SO bad, it's actually pretty funny. This one is the best in my opinion. You should ...

The Terror is terrible

Advantages: I got for 99p (wait you want advantages)
Disadvantages: I wasted over an hour of my life. Well i laughed

...guy who has taken on the body and mind of teh duke. In my mind that pretty much makes him the duke. What else is left. There's nothing horrifying about despite the name. Ha God it's crap. I bought it for 99p and it's not worth any more than that. It's just so unbelievably stupid. This mightn't be the most articulate review ever but if you see this film you'll understand. It's also full of historical inaccuracies to name a few 1) Jack plays a napoleonic ...
...and he ends up beside the sea. 2) This Napolenic soldier dspite being really bad at orientation does eem to be quite clever as he has invented the revolver and given it to the onset of the 19th century 3) The Baron/duke who is apparently austrian but could be Italian if the geography worked out abit better prefers to adorn his castle in French and English standards rather than those of his own nation. But the greatest shock is Francis Ford Coppolla ...

cheap, cheesy classic

Advantages:
Disadvantages:

HG Lewis' Blood Feast is a an early sixties camp gore classic. The acting is wooden, the dialogue truly terrible, and the music relaint on a kettle drum being bashed very slowly. It's also legendary as the first color splatter film, lensed in 'gushing blood color' no less. The plot concerns one Fuad Ramses, a weirdo with greasepaint eyebrows, who stares a lot and rants about his beloved godess ishtar, who resembles a store front dummy sprayed gold. ...
...a hard goddess to satisfy though, and demands human sacrifice. Ramses obliges, stabbing girls through the eye, ripping out their tongues, scalping them etc etc. The gore effects use slaughterhouse props: bits of meat somewhat obviously laid over the actresses, and lots of fake blood. Ramses holds up the various body parts to the camera, which lovingly looks at them at length. Although terrible, this is compulsive vieweing, and great fun. Needless ...
