The Hammer Collection Box Set

Advantages: An aesthetically pleasing collection
Disadvantages: Some rather poor inclusions

...of classic Hammer films from the very good to...not so good. An aesthetically pleasing set for fans of the studio, or those wanting at least half of the titles. Features star favourites Peter Cushing, Raquel Welch, Ursula Andress and Christopher Lee (about whom there is an interesting documentary with 'Scars of Dracula'). The extra features vary greatly, the biggest ommission, in my opinion, is the total absence of subtitles for the hearing impaired. ...
...some for the first time, and completely uncut. My personal favourite was the inclusion of the 1965 film 'The Nanny' which stars a very chilling Bette Davis in a well scripted, and often overlooked role. Probably a tad overpriced for most, but new DVD versions of individual films are also available, so take a look at some of those if you don't want to commit yourself to a full collection. ...

Vampires

Advantages: Has some good moments
Disadvantages: Weak script and the weakest Count yet!!

...especially so coming from director John Carpenter ,who's earlier films like ' Escape from New York ' and ' Assault on precinct 13' were in a different league to this. The star , a modern day vampire hunter armed with a crossbow and metallic spears , does what he can with the role. In fact James Woods does well with what he's given , but there again he steals the scenes in nearly all of his films anyway.... not that he has much competition here however. ...

King of the Zombie Flicks

Advantages: Inventive, fast paced, fun
Disadvantages: Some weak acting

Return of the Living Dead (1985) Okay, I’m in a good mood. So time to review something I really like. I must have seen this more times than any other movie. Way into double figures here. I’ll try not to be too biased though. Superficially Return of the Living Dead seems like another trashy horror film. It has excessive gore, violence, swearing and a smattering of nudity. But this film never claims to be a masterpiece and it is that humble attitude ...
...special make up effects right. Return of the Living Dead does so by the bucket load (literally). Allan A Apone heads up the make up team. He is a veteran of the Star Trek TV Series and Movies and major pictures like Swat (2003) and XXX (2002). He makes the living dead suitable dirty (after clawing their way up through muddy soil) and disgusting. They are soggy oozing, torn apart creatures. FX man Tony Gardner created a decomposed (upper) half corpse ...
