1980's slasher!
Review of Prom Night DVD by
beckster83
Advantages: Good casting
Disadvantages: Quality and effects (but it is nearly 30 years old!)
...(of course), and on their prom night, no less. For a movie of it's time (1980) the storyline is I guess, not bad. If you are looking for a gory type horror, making you want to cover your eyes then you may be disappointed with this, but it did make me jump a few times! The acting was good, not as cheesy as what I thought it would be when I first put the DVD into the machine. The special effects were nothing special, but again, as a film from this ...

Paint The Town With Blood
Review of Inferno by
sghawken
Advantages: Looks amazing
Disadvantages: Slightly puzzling and disjointed
...to say my confusion over Inferno was down to my ill-understanding of the movie but this is not the case, and sadly one I see raised in a number of reviews online. Even though the story is a little disjointed in both its cast use but in its general storytelling, the movie remains incredibly popular with Argento fans because there really is something about it.
The late great Lucio Fulci believed that actors were a secondary issue when it came to film ... ...is another unusual factor about Inferno and that is in its music. Despite great collaborations with progressive rock band Goblin, and with the acclaimed composer Ennio Morricone Argento choose to go elsewhere for his music signing, heading instead this time to British rock band composer Keith Emerson of the band Emerson, Lake and Palmer. Emerson delivers a typically inspired piece of Argento music, jazzing up classical legends as well as injecting ...

Did you see Saw?
Review of Saw DVD by
sunmeilan
Advantages: Initially compelling, creepy
Disadvantages: All much of a muchness
Adam wakes up to find himself submerged in a bath full of water. Horrified, and unaware of what is happening, he leaps out, to find himself chained to the wall of what appears to be the public toilet from hell with no way out. Then he realises that in the middle of a room is a dead man with his brains bashed out. And on the other side of the room is another man - Dr Lawrence Gordon - also chained up and also at a loss to know why. Then they find ... ...realises they have been captured by a serial killer who goes by the name of Jigsaw. If they follow the instructions, they may survive. Then again, they might not. Can they find a way to get out? And will the police be of any help?
Leigh Whannell, an Australian actor I have not heard of before, plays Adam. He also helped write the screenplay along with director James Wan. I think he does a really good job as Adam; at least, I never once doubted that ...

Who Is The Psycho Sexual Killer?
Review of The Flesh And Blood Show DVD by
sghawken
Advantages: Scary music
Disadvantages: A real slow burner
...theatrical company to appear in the improvisational play The Flesh And Blood Show. Beginning in a small Essex seaside town, the show would begin here on a theatre at the end of a deserted pier before moving on to the West End. Having travelled from across the UK the group of performers arrive in the small town, where no hotel rooms are available. Opting instead to bunk in the old theatre, than to actively look for accommodation the group are soon ... ...especially when they discover that the play is so improvised that there is not even the most basic of scripts. When one of the group goes missing, and shortly after a beheaded body is found under the stage; this soon get considerably worse.
The Flesh And Blood Show is a 1972 movie by Pete Walker, it has a group of familiar cast of the day including Ray Brooks, Robin Askwith, Jenny Hanley and Patrick Barr. For the director it was his first really ...

Sequels never life up to the hype do they?
Review of The Lost Boys/Lost Boys 2 - The Tribe DVD by
redlane99
Advantages: Both films in 1.
Disadvantages: The Tribe being the cheesiest vampire movie.. ever!
...Lost Boys is one of the best vampire movies out there, which upon opening quicky assumed cult status and for good reason. Joel Schumacher, the director behind other films such as 8mm, Flatliners and A Time to Kill, boldly combines horror and comedy and gives us a film, that even lacking in substance, you can really sink your teeth into (sorry!). It is an 80's classic, with unforgettable outfits and an even more unforgettable soundtrack. The casting ... ...and even though the performances of Haim and Feldman are, to put it politely, rather camp, he pulls it off. Lost Boys 2 is another matter altogether. I have to admit to being excited on hearing it was being made but to be honest it was not really worth the wait. Why Feldman decided to star i do not know.. surely the money from Goonies and Gremlins has not run out? The casting of 2 young and exceptionally good looking males kept me interested though ...
