following the progress of a young officer through the ranks of the British navy during the Napoleonic Wars. The series greatest asset is the handsome and charismatic Ioan Gruffudd in the lead role, surely a major star in the making. For television films the production values are very good, though asTitanic,WaterworldandThe Perfect Stormdemonstrated, filming an aquatic adventure is a very expensive business, and it is clear that theHornblowerdramas simply make the best of comparatively small budgets. No more faithful to Forester's books than the 1951 Gregory Peck classicCaptain Horatio Hornblower, the real inspiration seems to have come from the success ofSharpe, starring Sean Bean, which likewise featured a British hero in the Napoleonic Wars. Nevertheless, while rather more easy going than the real British navy of the time, the Hornblower saga delivers an entertaining adventure, greatly enhanced by the presence of such guest stars as Denis Lawson, Cheri Lunghi, Ronald Pickup and Anthony Sher.Firmly settled on HMS Indefatigable and mentored by Captain Pellew (an excellent Robert Lindsay), "The Examination for Lieutenant" finds Spain entering the war in an adventure involving both the Black Death and a lethal fireship.--Gary S Dalkin

General Information ---------------------------- The second in the Hornblower series of what would best be described as nautical adventures set in the 18th-19th Centuries. The films were shown on tv before being released on DVD. Andrew Grieve does a commendable job of converting C.S.Forester's books (with a few artistic liberties of course!) to film.
I would rate this perhaps my joint favourite episode of the series along with the Duchess and the Devil. This episode has a lot of plot and a lot of good action.
A bit of the storyline -------------------------- In this episode Horatio Hornblower is trying, in the midst of his first command, to study for his examination for lieutenant (as the name suggests!).
With his lack of experience and money he is a way behind the others and flounders in the exam. He is further at a disadvantage due to a previous comical encounter with Dreadnought Foster and some cattle! But circumstances eventually help him as attention is drawn from the exam to a fireship approaching the examiners' ships.
In one of the bravest moves of the series Hornblower boards the ship and attempts to steer it away from the other ships. In the course of it saving Dreadnought Foster from certain death aswell as saving the ships from destruction.
For me the moment when the gig boat picks up Hornblower and Foster is one of the funniest with great performances from Hammond and Foster.
There is more comedy to come in Hornblower's dealings with the dumpy Mr Tapling.
One of my personal highlights of this episode and the whole series is the realtionships Hornblower forms with his men especially Matthews and Styles, you see the beginnings of it here.
Yes, the more I think about it for this review the more i see it as one of the best, I might have to go and watch it again now for the innumerable time! enjoy.
The DVD itself -------------------- As for the dvd itself, there are no extras to speak of, merely a scene selection function. It would be great to have a 'making of' or a commentary but it still represents good value for money without any of these in my opinion.
Continuing the adventures of C.S. Forester's dashing Hornblower, this episode see's intrigue in the English War with France when Spain makes peace with the French and stop helping the English. Hornblower's ship, The Indefatigable rescue the legendary and fearsome Captain Dreadnought Foster from the waves but he makes a poor impression on the senior officer when he botches a routine assignment. Hornblower subsequently expects to fail his Lieutenant's exam as Foster is on the examination panel until events conspire to allow him to prove his bravery.
