"It was everything I always wanted. But when I had got it, it felt like nothing, less than nothing."
The quote above comes from "Honey" - I'm not using it to describe my feelings about the film once I watched it!!! Despite the decidedly mixed reviews, I have wanted to see "Honey" for ages. In my head, it was going to be the next "Save the Last Dance", so when my sister offered to lend me it on Saturday, I jumped at the chance to finally get to watch it.
The film is about a girl named Honey Daniels, who is working in a record store by day and bartending by night in order to support her ambition to become a famous dancer and choreographer. In a fairytale twist, she gets her big break and finds herself choreographing music videos for some of the biggest names in the hip hop and r & b world - Tweet, Jadakiss, Ginuwine . . . it seems that her dreams are finally coming true. And, on top of this, she has managed to bag a hot man for herself, in the form of cute barber Chaz. Could life get any better than this?
"There's people that good things happen to. And there's people that good things don't happen to. That's just the way it goes."
But you can be brought back down to earth as quickly as you rise to success and Honey finds that this is the case when her boss turns nasty on her, and she realises just how fickle and corrupt her chosen industry actually is. In the meantime she has let friends, family and the dance group which she teaches at the local youth centre fall by the wayside. Which is a shame since there are a group of talented kids who could really use her help. But maybe there is some way for her to make their lives better . . .
I will not deny for one moment that this film is sprinkled with a little too much sugar at some points, but this does not necessarily make it a bad thing. It certainly wasn't a "Save the Last Dance" imitation - the only similarities really were the dance angle and the kids getting into trouble storylines. Only in this case, the kids getting into trouble really WERE kids, which made it really quite sad, that they felt that a life of crime was all they could make for themselves. It was strange because, when they first appeared, they were acting like a gang of ghetto "Annie" auditionees, then everything got decidedly darker. Lil Romeo and Zachary Williams play the two main kids in the film, Benny and Raymond, and do a great job - particularly Zachary, who is unbelievably cute - of playing two children who have been forced to grow up too fast due to a tough home life and the neighbourhood they've grown up in.
"Dark Angel"'s Jessica Alba was definitely the best choice to play Honey. She has that right mix of innocent young girl crossed with self-assuredness which allowed her to play the part of naive but feisty Honey perfectly. The fact she is so bloody gorgeous also helped detract from the syrupy sweetness of some of the things she said at times! Her relationship with Chaz (ER's Mekhi Phifer) also seemed believable, as there did seem to be a good amount of chemistry between them before they got together - after this the relationship wasn't focussed on too much as this wasn't really the point of the film. No one was against the relationship like in "Save The Last Dance", as Honey was apparently of mixed race herself so there was no big deal made of them getting together.
Other good performances came from Joy Bryant, as Honey's mouthy best friend Gina - a showoff with a heart of gold - but it was David Moscow (previously of "Zoe Duncan Jack and Jane") who really surprised me with his role of video director Michael Ellis. He was the sleazy, weak-hearted, pathetic, bad guy of the film and, while it really did seem to be casting against type, he was actually really believable as the figure of hatred he became as the film progressed.
"You need to call M.C. Hammer and let him know you're stealing his stuff. Ya'll two crazy people in here!"
To illustrate Honey's successful new career, we also have cameo appearances from a number of familiar faces from the music scene - the aforementioned Tweet, Ginuwine and Jadakiss, as well as producer supremo Rodney Jenkins and, most amusingly, Missy Elliot herself! It's definitely fun to do a bit of celeb-spotting.
I'd say that this is primarily a chick-flick, so unless you guys want to admire the gorgeous Jessica Alba, you'd probably want to be giving it a miss. But if you're a girly-girl like myself and like your r & b (the soundtrack is absolutely fantastic!!!), you will definitely love what is essentially a ghetto fairytale. It may be over-sweet at times, but its definitely entertaining from start to finish and will evoke loads of warm and fuzzy feelings within you!

...I wouldn't really know.
Honey Daniels is played by Jessica Alba. She is a really great actress in my opinion, however I do think that this film wasn't good, and that surprised me by her acting skills considering the fact that she is a brilliant actress, this film is supposed to be just as good, but I don't think it really shows her acting abilities and just shows how a film can put over that the star is a rubbish actor/actress.

Sweet-natured family girl Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba) is a glamorous and talented dancer, she attends every audition she can, but as yet is undiscovered. In order to fund her dream she works by day in a music store, by night she pours drinks behind the bar of a lively nightclub, and, after her shift, dances the night away with best friend Gina (Joy Bryant). Honey is a modern-day angel who cares about the young people in her Harlem ghetto neighbourhood ... ...to top choreographer.
However, Honey is somewhat naive about the industry she has become part of, and when she rejects Michael's advances his hurt makes him bitter and vindictive, and, as a consequence, her young street kids are disappointed to not be included in a video shoot, and Honey finds herself unable to find work, and her promising career as a choreographer appears to at an end.
Oh, it doesn't rain, but it pours. One of Honey's young street ...

...of the show, who plays Honey Daniels.
From early on in the film, we see that Honey is a good-natured and caring young woman. At the age of twenty-two, she lives at her family home with both her parents and has a very active life in the community. Her drive for ambition, pushes her to do everything she can to further her career. As a result, she has to be very organised to take control of her hectic life and juggle her three job commitments.

In the evenings Honey works in a nightclub, on a special agreement with her managers, to work until 1am and dance until 3am. (I certainly wish I had managers like that, when I was working in a club! Usually, they do not let anyone go until the place is fully cleaned down after closing!). Before she finishes at 1am, her best friend Gina is always allowed into the club for free, to join her on the dance floor until 3am.
The dance floor in ...

Honey is a film starring Jessica Alba & Mekhi Phifer. It can easily compared to films like Save the last dance, Coyote Ugly & Step Up but this definitely measures up to the big guns in this film genre.
Honey was released in the UK on the 12th March 2004 & was greeted with mixed reviews. Honey follows Jessica Alba's character the aptly named Honey through her struggle to make it in the tough world of hip hop dancing. She has always dreamed of becoming ... ...make you see past this. Honey will mainly appeal to teenagers & young adults who are fans of the genre. Any fan of Step Up or Save The Last Dance will enjoy this or of course any fan of Jessica Alba.
There are some great extras on this DVD including, the making of Honey, deleted scenes, outtakes, how to do the dance moves & also music videos from Blaque, Jadakiss & Shawn Desmon.

The Hip Hop HoneysDVD series showcases very sexy women taking off their underwear whilst writhing to hip-hop beats. It?s not hardcore pornography, but there is excessive nudity, so it?s definitely not a DVD to play when your Gran is round for tea. If you?re into girls, hip-hop and music videos in general, or from an academic perspective the rise of raunch culture (it epitomises raunch feminism), then this is a surprisingly classy DVD that is worth buying if you can get it cheap. (The rrp is £19.95 but I picked it up from an independent record store for £4.99)

Honey I Shrunk the Kids is one of my favourite movies from when I was a kid. In my opinion, it?s not a classic like Back to the Future or The Goonies is for me but it is still fairly high on my list. The film was actually released in 1989, wow, that?s 20 years ago now.

In the tradition of 'Fame' and 'Flashdance' comes this scorching hip-hop based dance fable about a talented girl's struggle to express herself in a fickle and corrupt industry. New York City dancer-choreographer Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba, of TV's Dark Angel) has the talent to be a dance sensation but is forced to wise up when her dreams come true only to turn into a less than perfect reality.

DVD Description
With a plethora of flashy cameos by artists Missy Elliot, Tweet, Ginuwine, Jadakiss, and Sheek, HONEY feels like an extended hip-hop video with an inspiring, socially conscious message about ambition and the bittersweet taste of success. New York City dancer-choreographer Honey Daniels (Jessica Alba, of TV's DARK ANGEL) hopes her talent will soon be recognized, but for now she's working three odd jobs: in a record store, as dance teacher at the local youth centre, and bartender in a Manhattan dance club. Hot director of music videos Michael Ellis (David Moscow, JUST MARRIED, BIG) spots an amateur video of Honey cutting a rug after work, and gives her a shot at the big time when he asks her to choreograph videos for Ginuwine and Tweet. Just as the big bucks start rolling in, Honey gets a nasty dose of reality when she rebuffs the director's sexual advances and is blackballed by the industry. Honey throws herself back into her community work with a vengeance and helps two of her most talented students Benny (Lil' Romeo) and Raymond (Zachary Isaiah Williams) stay out of the hands of local drug dealers. HONEY is a 21st-century version of FLASHDANCE or FAME--an infinitely entertaining urban dance movie that gets viewers' feet tapping with high-energy choreography and strings of catchy, cutting-edge tunes.
