This is a heart warming story of three pets who get seperated from their beloved owners and risk life and limb trying to find their way back home. It is a remake of the 1963 film 'The Incredible Journey' which was based on a novel of the same name by Sheila Burnford. Homeward Bound was made in 1993 and directed by Duwayne Dunham.
CHARACTERS- The main characters in the movie are the animals, the owners (the Burnford-Seaver children) and the mother and father:
''Shadow'' the old, loyal and wise Golden Retriever voiced by Don Ameche and his devoted owner ''Peter'' played by Benj Thall ''Sassy'' a sarcastic Himalayan cat, voiced by Sally Feild and her owner ''Hope'' played by Veronica Lauren and ''Chance'', a lovable, playfull American Bulldog voiced by Micheal J. Fox and his owner ''Jamie'' played by Kevin Chevalia
''Laura'', the childrens mother played by Kim Greist and ''Bob'' the childrens step-father played by Robert Hays.
THE STORY- The story starts Laura is getting married to her new husband, Bob. Chance the dog is narrating the story, telling how he used to be in the pound but got a second chance (and his new name!) when he got adopted by the Burnford-Seaver family. As the family head off on holiday after the wedding they leave their pets on a farm with a family friend. Soon Shadow becomes convinced that his owner Peter has abandoned him and sets of to find him, the other two animals follow.
On their journey home they come across several problems whilst they trek through the mountains including Chance getting hurt by a porcupine and Sassy falling in a fast flowing river. However they continue on, deseperate to find their treasured owners.
They family hear of the news that the animals have escaped from the farm and are frantic with worry, Bob hands out flyers with the animals names and descriptions. They have no luck until the animals find a lost little girl in the mountains and their girls parents recognise the animals from the flyer, they get taken to an animal rescue centre and the owners are informed, however the animals are convinced they are going to ''the bad place'' (the pound) and as soon as they get there they work together to escape.
Their plan works and they are soon back out in the open on their journey home, the owners discover that the animals have escaped from the rescue shelter and are left with only one option, to go home and wait to see if they make it back.
In prehaps the saddest moment of the film which always brings a tear to my eye, eldery Shadows falls down a deep hole in which he cannot get out from. Chance goes down too, to help coax him out, however Shadow says he is simply too old and cannot make it and that Chance has to learn to say goodbye..we are left wondering whether Shadow manages to get out.
Whilst the children and Bob are playing in the garden, little Jamie hears a bark he believes comes from his dog Chance. And they can't believe it as the playful pup comes bounding from the woodland in to their garden, closely followed by Sassy the cat. As Bob says ''the family is all coming back together'', the look on Peters face that his best friend Shadow hasn't returned with the others is heart breaking! Walking away, almost in tears he just shakes his head and say Shadow was too old and that it was too far.
Thankfully its a happy ending as the family burst into tears of joy as they see Shadow limping into their garden. Peter turns and runs to his dog, and Shadow runs to him, his limp slowly going away! Ahhh!
*****
I must have seen this film literally hundreds of times now, and almost know it word by word! I never tire of watching this film and each time it has me in tears even though I know the ending is a happy one! It may not be to everyones tastes but to me its a classic which I will always love, and will always be my favourite film by far.
The film is 84 minutes long and by Walt Disney Pictures. Its available in both video and DVD. (DVD £5.48 from Amazon.co.uk) There is a 1996 sequel to this movie called ''Homeward Bound: Lost In San Francisco'', this time the pets get lost from an airport in the city and attempt to find their way home once again.

HOMEWARD BOUND
I am writing a review on the Disney Movie Homeward Bound - the Incredible Journey.
THE DVD COVER
The cover of the DVD is very appealing, it is a picture of three animals walking, with the sunset in the background. Very scenic and beautiful. I really like the choice of DVD cover the used, it let's the audience know that the story is about these animals without mentioning them. As the title does not give away the storyline.
The STORY ... ...three animals - Chance, Sassy and Shadow when they are separated from their owners, and decide to make their own way home. These three incredible animals express their feelings throughout the movie with real human voices. They encounter a lot of different events in their journey, but they all stick together and keep going. Sassy is a female cat, who thrives on affection. Shadow is the older dog, the golden retriever, who is the loyal dog of the family ...

Made in 1993, this heart-warming story is still as watchable as ever. A must see for all children.
As 3 pets with 3 very different personalities are lost, they do all they can to get back home, meeting a variety of friends and foes along the way. At 84 minutes long, the story does not drag on too long for anyone to keep their attention. I can remember sitting through it at least 10 times as a youngster. As far as the story and characters are concerned, ... ...family entertainment. The main 3 characters are: Shadow: An older golden retreiver, who due to his age, is the natural leader for the three. He is slightly more serious, but also brave and determined to get home to be reunited with his owner.
Missy is a Siamese cat, who loves to be pampered and is distraught at being lost. She wants nothing more than to get home and be groomed.
Chance is a young and playful dog who is thrilled by the fact he has ...

The Incredible Journey
This is undoubtedly one of the greatest movies ever to come from the Walt Disney studios. It has set the scene for so many other great animal based movies.
It bases around the "Incredible Journey" taken by three pets who are pining for their owners. You have "Chance" the American Bulldog, he's still a pup fresh from the pound, he is the pet of the youngest boy and when the owners leave he just thinks its ... ...then they leave him. Next is "Sassy" the Himalayan cat who has been the pampered pet of the young girl in the family. She so misses the luxury she enjoyed at the old home. The new "carer" lives on a farm so hasn't the time to do as she likes and give her the treat of warmed milk etc. Lastly there is "Shadow", he's a golden retriever, the old one of the trio. He belongs to the eldest child and doesn't believe that the family would ever abandon them.

Advantages: A Great Family Film with Comedy and Drama Disadvantages: none
This Walt Disney studios production is based on Sheila Burnford's classic animal-adventure novel and was made in 1993. In which the heroic trio of animals (two dogs and a cat) track their way across America to find their way home. The animal voices are played by Don Ameche (Shadow), Michael J. Fox (Chance), and Sally Field (Sassy), who are just brilliant especially Fox who plays Chance the young Bulldog pup. The family have to go away as the dad ... ...take their animals they have to leave them with Auntie.
The animals don't understand why the family is leaving them and decide to make their way home. Which is when all the adventures start, encountering Bears, Mountain Lions and wild rivers. Some of very funny scenes stick in my mind when Chance the Bulldog is trying fish and gets chased by the Bears, also when he gets stuck with Porcupine spikes. One of Sassy the cat star roles is when she rescues ...
