All of the animals that live on the Patch of Heaven ranch are family more than food. When the ranch is threatened with foreclosure by the bank, three cows set out to track down the no-good cattle rustler Alameda Slim, so they can claim the reward and save the farm.

“Home on the Range” marks the end of an era for Disney. It is their last hand-drawn feature. But if this pile of sentimental drivel is the best they can do, then frankly it’s a good thing. This film continues the downward spiral the House of Mouse has been on for years. There was a brief respite when they took a turn for the funnier with “The Emperor’s New Groove”, but that was apparently an aberration. As is this film. I cannot fathom how it was ever green-lit by the studio. Did the animators threaten to leave if they didn’t have something, anything to work on? If that’s the case, they should have packed up and left while they had the chance, because there is little chance of anyone attached to this project being offered more work if this is the best they can do. Brief uses of 3-D animation show up the limitations of the prevalent 2-D technology at every turn. The backgrounds aren’t so much old-fashioned as out-dated and blatantly stolen from 1950s’ Warner Brothers’ shorts. The story itself is paper-thin and mundane in the extreme. How many kids are going to care about an old lady from another time who can’t meet her mortgage payments? I mean, how many children even know what foreclosure means? It doesn’t help that the characters are terribly similar to each other and not very exciting to watch. Part of that is down to the way they are drawn. The director has chosen a strange style that makes the animals’ bodies blocky and angular, with short spindly limbs. It’s reminiscent of the cartoon version of Terry Pratchett’s “Wyrd Sisters” a few years ago and isn’t very appealing to look at. Personally, the only cows I’m interested in are the ones that come in slices with chips or Yorkshire puddings. It doesn’t help that the villainous Alameda Slim is a patent rip off of Yosemite Sam, either. The whole affair feels like a throwback to the fifties or sixties when the world and its infants were more innocent and more easily entertained. And where three mentally defective, identical yokel buys were the height of hilarity.
It’s not only the animation in this cartoon that is two-dimensional – the jokes fall flatter than a motorway hedgehog. The funniest scene is one in which every low-down varmint in the desert tries to eat a rabbit with a peg leg. Unfortunately this happens during the opening sequence and things go rapidly downhill from there. The pacing is slower than a legless tortoise and the film consequently seems far longer than its seventy-six minute running time. With any luck though, the kiddiwinks will doze off and you’ll get an hour’s break. The musical interludes rely on an appreciation of yodelling and country and western to be enjoyable, so they weren’t my cup of tea.
The thing that perplexes me most about this film is why so many well-known actors agreed to supply voices for the characters. Voice-overs are provided by not one but two Oscar winners (Dame Judi Dench and Cuba Gooding Jr) but every single vocal performance is lacklustre. Roseanne Barr’s voice is grating as Maggie, Judi Dench sounds half asleep as Mrs Calloway and Jennifer Tilly is completely wasted as Grace. Cuba Gooding Jr is never allowed to run off at the mouth as would-be wonder horse Buck and Randy Quaid appears to have gargled with gravel to no particular end. Instead of taking advantage of their stars public personas and personal foibles, Disney seem to have been determined to knock this film out as quickly as possible, so have gone with monotone read-throughs from rehearsals. Had this been a Dreamworks or Pixar production, there would have been digs at Barr’s marriage to a bodyguard, Dench’s role as M in the Bond series, Tilly’s dizzy blonde schtick and Cuba’s inability to find a decent role since winning the golden baldie for “Jerry Maguire” (so no change there then). But then, had this been a Dreamworks or Pixar production, it would have been worth watching.
This is the lamest duck to have limped out of the Disney pond for years and I would strongly suggest that you send “Home on the Range” and its boring bovines to the knackers yard. No matter how much your tiny tots beg you, don’t give in to the marketing might of Mickey’s minions, it really isn’t worth the price of the ticket.
Advantages: great story and animation, lovely music Disadvantages: None from my family
I have to say that my hubby’s film choices are improving so much lately, this is another film we found out about when we saw a trailer for it on a DVD we watch a few weeks ago. It did look very funny and enjoyable for my myself and the boys. I am glad to say it did not disappoint me. At the start of the film we meet Maggie, she is a show cow but as her owners farm has been closed down she is taken to her new home, Patch of Heaven. She soon shows ... ...cow and is the helper of the leader, Calloway and they are a bit weary of Maggie but soon warm to her. Shortly after Maggie’s arrival the Sherriff arrives and tells the owner that if she cannot pay the money she owes on her farm then it will be auctioned off. Maggie decides that she will not let ‘Patch of Heaven’ be closed down as all of the animals there love the place so much and it is a very happy place to live so she takes action. Maggie along ...

...me for ages to buy Home on the Range, and, unknown to them, it had been languishing in my Amazon basket for several weeks, waiting for me to add something in order to get free delivery. Then I noticed that Amazon had put the price up by several pounds to £19.99, and although this meant that I could now get free postage on this DVD alone, I was sure I could get it cheaper elsewhere, so I deleted it. The next day, I ventured into the oven that is our ... ...prospect of losing both her home and her beloved animals. She reckons without the resilience of newcomer Maggie, who through her experience as a show cow, is far more travelled and worldly wise than her country cousins, and she hits upon the idea of the cows travelling to the County Fair to enter a show in an attempt to win the money for Pearl's reprieve. The disapproving Mrs C is appalled at such a prospect, but Grace (Jennifer Tilly), a dizzy and ...

OK, firstly I will take this opportunity to apologise for the appalling puns already used, and for any others that inadvertently follow!!!
This film has been out on DVD for some time now after a brief spell in our cinemas. It has some sentimental value as this is the final film to be produced using Disney's usual animation method of hand drawn characters. However, this also marks a return to form following some poorer offerings in recent years, ... ...itself is 73 minutes long which may be a little short for some people but it is meant to be a children's film and therefore comes with a universal classification. The cost can vary but you should be able to pick it up for around £10 - £15 in all entertainment shops. I purchased my copy in Tesco supermarket which was £13.99 a few weeks ago.
Although this film is all animation it still has an all star cast with the following big name stars involved.

Already released in the US and due to open here Mid-august is Disney’s brand new animated feature film ‘Home on the Range’.
This is a film of great importance to Disney. Firstly, their last few films have been fairly big failures in the Cinema and the company has had to rely on its association with Pixar to obtain Critical and commercial success. That partnership has now ended and Disney are back on their own. Secondly, this film is the last ever ... ...their films will be made using the new 3D animated techniques that were used in small doses on ‘Beauty and the Beast’ and ‘Tarzan’.
The film focuses on four main characters, 3 of those are Cows voiced by Jennifer Tilley, Roseanne Barr and the always superb Dame Judi Dench. In addition to this trio of heffers is a stallion who is an expert in martial arts and goes by the name of Buck. He's voiced by Cuba Gooding Jr.
The film sees our four heroes ...

...choice was between Thunderbirds and Home on the Range. Thunderbirds seems too annoying for words so we went for the traditional Disney movie. It’s the last one made using traditional 2D methods and I can not say I’m sorry.
