I remember the Christmas day way back in 1990/91 when I opened one of my presents to find the Home Alone video inside. I'd never heard of it before, but my goodness - I couldn't stop watching it for years......
I've divided the review up into mini-reviews of each film for ease of reference. Be sure to let me know what you think once you've seen them. If you have already, then you'll have a fairly good idea of what this review focuses on.....
HOME ALONE (Macaullay Culkin) ------------------- Starring the late John Candy in a small but memorable role, this film is one of the funniest and most genuinely entertaining that I've ever come across. The plot involves the youngest son (Kevin) being left home alone and getting up to all sorts of mischief, defending himself and the community, all the while trying to figure out what the strange man in the neighbourhood shovelling snow is up to!!
A Christmas movie for the family in every sense of the word, the best scenes involve a tarantuala being placed on a guys face - my gosh does he scream!! And who could forget Marv and Harry shouting up the house stairs, only for the kid to chuck 2 cans of paint down on a rope which then crash into their faces?!?!?
A top film and one that can be watched again and again. The ending is touching, and I'll admit that yeah I did shed a tear. I'd be surprised if most of you wouldn't when you see the happiest of endings. This film is worth the price of the set alone.
HOME ALONE 2 (Macaullay Culkin) ---------------------- This sequel is set a year later, and involves the same family going on their annual Christmas travels. They however leave their youngest son (YES! Him again!) to get on the WRONG plane. Well he ends up in New York, and they travel to Florida.
One maxed-out credit card, police chase and fun-house of tricks later, the family are on the hunt for him in the city that never sleeps at the busiest time of the year.
Number 2 isn't as funny as the original but has some great gags, and as with the first has a genuinely touching end as a woman living on the streets has a Merry Christmas courtesy of Kevin (Culkin).

HOME ALONE 3 ---------------------- This is a real step aside for the series, as the plot becomes increasingly bizarre and unlikely. An airport luggage mix-up results in a young Alex Pruitt getting his hands on a Military computer chip hidden inside a toy car.
The military want it back, but then so do a group of crooks.
The film focuses on the same tried and tested formula of tricks and gadgets getting the better of the nighbourhood intruders as they try to get back the toy car.
How does an electric fence sound? Or a remote control car with a camera to spy with? How about a gallon of snow to pour over the men when they don't suspect it? These are the type of tricks that we all wanted to play as a kid when we all lived in a different world. A world in which the escapades of Dennios the Menace and Desperate Dan seemed believeable and possible to us all. We could only dream of having the booby traps that this kid has to use in Home Alone 4.
It's not as funny, and at times the jokes are repeated from the earlier movies, but a bag of popcorn and a rainy day would tempt you into sitting through this, if only to see where the car ends up. A great film for the kids!
I should also add that the soundtrack to the first 2 films is outstanding. Lots of memorable songs being sung in churches, orchestral tunes and the main theme is one you'll remember almost straight away and be humming to yourself.
I'll give the set a 4 only because of the 3rd film's weaker quality and comic appeal. Well worth a look though, and a great treat for those of you who watched them when you were kids!!!

I love these films, my husband cries with laughter everytime the scene with the shopping falls out of the bottom of the carrier bag!
