I'm not averse to watching a couple of films with negative reviews every now and then, and this is what I experienced with Hollywood Homicide. The film stars Harrison Ford and Josh Hartnett as two cops who moonlight as other things and pits them against some bad guys in investigating a multiple homicide. It hasn't received great reviews, and I could see why. The director, Ron Shelton, hasn't really grabbed the bull by the horns with this one. The actors appear uncomfortable and the plot is just too weak.
The plot is one that has been used before. Two cops pitted together against their will, the veteran Joe Gavilan (Ford) and the rookie K C Calden (Hartnett), to investigate the murders of four men in a club shooting. They uncover corruption as they worm their way towards a bigger plot that they find themselves caught up in. And, naturally, there is an internal investigation going on in the department, and the internal investigator just happens to have a long term grudge against Gavilan.
There are positives about the film. It does pass the time and it isn;t a complete disaster. Hartnett is a bit wet, and Ford overplays the grumpy old sergeant role a bit too much, but the performances from the rest of the cast are actually okay, particularly Lena Olin and Isiah washington. Shelton doesn't really make this film as good as it could be, but then even that is limited, with the plot having been visited a few times before. The difference here is that the two leads moonlight as other things, with Gavilan a real estate broker and Calden an aspiring actor. This does give a little comedy to the film, and that is welcomed as this would be no good as just an action film.
I find it hard to give this film higher than a one star rating. I didn't really like it at all, and would find it hard to want to watch it again. The DVD is available from amazon.co.uk for £3.98, but I wouldn't bother if I were you.
