I’m on holiday now. I took the kids to my parents who live about 1,600 km away from us and we spend now 3 weeks here then go back. My parents enjoy spending a lot of time with them so I can relax now. It seemed so convenient to watch The Holiday that I watched it. It was a very good film I’m still thinking about some plots of it. I think this means that it is a great film.
The Holiday was directed by Nancy Meyers. She is an American director, producer and screenplay writer. She directed several very successful films such as What Women Want, The Parent Trap (still on my to watch list), Something’s Gotta Give (which is one of my favourite movies) and It’s Complicated (I will watch it).
The film was made in 2006 and luckily it s not a Christmas comedy like Home Alone which is a good film but I’m bored to watch the 100th similar Christmas film. The classification is 12 years and older. The running time is 130 minutes. It is quite long but I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end.
It is a drama and romantic comedy as genre.
Cast ------ Amanda Woods – Cameron Diaz Iris Simpkins – Kate Winslet Graham Simpkins – Jude Law (Iris’s brother) Miles Dumont – Jack Black (film music composer) Arthur Abbott – Eli Wallach (screenwriter) Jasper Bloom – Rufus Sewell (Iris’s colleague, unrequited love) Sophie – Miffy Engelfield (Graham’s daughter) Olivia – Emma Pritchard (Graham’s daughter)
Plot ------ Iris (Kate Winslet) works as an editor for The Daily Telegraph in the UK. There is Christmas party in the office, she wraps carefully her present for her unrequited love, Jasper. She is still working while the others are celebrating already. Jasper comes into her office to talk to her. It is the best moment she can give him her present, it is a special book. The boss has an announcement so they go out to hear him: he announces Jasper’s engagement with one of their colleagues.
Amanda (Cameron Diaz) is a very successful film trailer editor, owner of the company. She lives in a luxurious house in Los Angeles. She realises that her boyfriend cheated on her so she fires him.
The two main characters sit in their home with broken hears. Amanda decides to go on a holiday to make easier forgetting her ex. She founds a home exchange site and writes a message to Iris. They decide to do the change next day. Amanda goes to Surrey and she finds a snow covered beautiful place away from the crowded cities. Iris arrives in the sunshiny L.A. where she founds a full equipped house. Both girls are surprised about their new place.
Amanda has an unexpected guest, Graham. He is Iris’s brother and pops in after a few drinks in the pub nearby. They spend the night together. In the meanwhile Iris meats Miles and his girlfriend who come to pick up the laptop of Amanda’s ex. She picks up an elderly man who seems to be lost and takes him home. He is the famous screenwriter Arthur Abbot. They have a lot in common so they talk for hours and become very good friends. And this is the point where my story ends. If you want to know whether the main characters recover from their lovesick I recommend you watching this film. It is worth.
My opinion ---------------- I loved that the story of this film was great it wasn’t predictable from the beginning because of the twists in the story line. The actors played brilliantly and the characters were well presented. The film had a real story and it still keeps me thinking about it.
My favourite character in this film was Arthur Abbott. His life is boring as he lost his wife and can hardly move. Then he meets Iris and she brings excitement and challenge in his life. I like how he tells old stories. Probably he reminds me to my grandfather and that’s why I loved his character.
I have to highlight Jude Law as well. I heard about his liaison but until he plays so brilliantly I can just admire him. He was a perfect match for the role of Graham I think. I loved him in the plots with her daughters. He seemed to be a perfect father. And his eyes… He can tell stories without words by simply looking at somebody.
Cameron Diaz was beautiful and she was surprisingly good. Actually I think she was better than Kate Winslet. I was surprised to see Kate Winslet in this film. She acted really well. I liked the plot when the girls arrived in each other’s home.
In one plot we could see even Dustin Hoffman. He had no real role in the film he played himself.
To sum up, it was a great story and a successful film. I can highly recommend it. You will entertain well while watching it and probably think about it later just like I do.

Advantages: Some nice performances and assured direction. Disadvantages: Some clumsy Americanisms in the dialogue and too little chemsitry in some relationships.
