The Holiday is a chick flick type film although it is not quite your normal chick flick. It is based around the story of two girls , Amanda, played by Cameron Diaz and Iris played by Kate Winslet. Amanda is a film trailer producer who has just broke up with her boyfriend, she lives in LA. Iris lives in Surrey in a little cottage and is a writer for a paper. She is still in love with her ex boyfriend who she works with and has just found out he is getting engaged.
Amanda starts searching on the Internet for some sort of holiday to get away and try and forget what has happened. She stumbles across Iris's cottage on a website and contacts her about coming over to stay. Iris jumps at the chance after all the pain she has been put through. So the two girls decide to swap homes for the holidays.
Once swapped Amanda meets Iris's brother Graham played by Jude Law. Iris over in LA meets Miles played by Jack Black. The two girls get in to their new environments and start to manage to solve their problems. I won't say what happens but there is as is expected some romance.
I think the idea of the story is quite good although slightly unbelievable in a way. Would two people who have never met really swap homes? Anyway films aren't meant to be believable so this can be excused. The film as a whole is good but not amazing. I am quite a fan on chick flicks and this isn't really one of my favourites.
I find the storyline slightly obvious in what is going to happen at the end which takes away from the element of surprise. This is probably true of most chick flicks but it isn't really the most thrilling storyline.
The characters are quite good. Although I did find that I preferred some to others. For some reason I preferred Iris's character and also Jude's. This may be because I actually prefer them to the other two. I found Cameron Diaz's character slightly annoying, she didn't really have a lot of depth to her. I did like Jack Black but didn't feel that it was the most natural role for him, it seemed almost forced. You expect to see him in a humorous role and there wasn't much of this in this role. There are also a few other characters which are wove into the story which do help and are good additions.
As a film based around the holidays it does not really have much mention of Christmas, although this may have been to be PC. I do like Christmas films though so this did disappoint in this way.
Overall it is a good, light hearted film with a fairly interesting storyline. I just feel that it doesn't quite live up to the potential of the all star cast.
This DVD can be purchased for around 4 pounds now, so is not bad for the money. It wouldn't be first on my lists of chick flicks to buy though.

Advantages: Brilliant moral lesson to be earned out of the movie- MINUS the intense heavy and boring stuff! Disadvantages: Not as Romantic as I expected!
