This is another movie of which I made my decision to see it based upon the trailer. While waiting for the Devil Wears Prada to start, this trailer was on, I thought it looked great, so when it came out just after Christmas I persuaded my Mum to come along to the cinema with me.
The plot is really unique, two strangers experiencing heartache in their respective homes decide to swap home and countries over the Christmas period. Amanda is a highly successful executive who makes movie trailers, living in a huge LA mansion, but after finding out that her boyfriend is cheating on her she begins to feel dissatisfied, so heads half away across the world to England. Flying over to Amanda’s home after chatting on the internet, is Iris. For years she has been hopelessly in love with her colleague, when he announces his engagement she realises that it really is over. Depression sets in and she decides that a change of scenery is the perfect idea. In England, Amanda finds the small cottage very different to her sunny LA mansion and she isn’t sure if she’ll stay. A tall dark stranger knocking on the cottage door in the middle of the night will change that. Iris’s time in America is much different, she loves the sunny LA house that she’s staying in. Meeting Arthur Abbott on a morning walk, she discovers how wonderful life can be, as he was a screenwriter during the Golden Age of Hollywood and has so much experience. She also meets Miles, an falls in love with him after his relationship falls apart, soon she realises that she wasn’t even that in love with her colleague, Rufus Sewell.
There are four major stars who help to hold the film together, the strength of the acting really helps the film, it wouldn’t be as good with less good actors. Cameron Diaz is a very well known actress, and one of my favourites, she has starred in films such as What Happens in Vegas, In Her Shoes and There’s Something About Mary as well as voicing a major character in all three Shrek films. In this film she manages to play Amanda with just the right mix of humour and seriousness. Kate Winslet is also an acclaimed actress, for me she was the best out of the four in the film although they were all very good. She seems to give her character so much depth, with a really wide range of emotions throughout the film, and you see her in both funny moments and moments where she is left emotionally vulnerable. Jude Law is the smooth talking British man who falls in love with Amanda, the woman who is staying in his sisters house, played by Cameron Diaz. I felt that this was a pairing with real chemistry, and quite a spark. Finally, Jack Black brings a more humorous element to the movie, all of his previous films have been funny, and these include School of Rock and Nacho Libre.
The locations that the film was shot in were simply stunning, going from one extreme to the next. While Surrey was covered in a beautiful winter wonderland of snow, LA stayed sunny as ever in some really nice beach scenes as Iris is driving past.
The movie was neither a major hit nor a flop at the box office, critics were in two minds about it and gave it mixed reviews.
The soundtrack was composed by the acclaimed Hans Zimmer, meaning there are no songs on the soundtrack, just the score. I didn’t really listen to the music during the film, but there was nothing bad about it.
Overall an excellent film, if you like chick flicks or any of the actors in it then this is a must see.

Advantages: Brilliant moral lesson to be earned out of the movie- MINUS the intense heavy and boring stuff! Disadvantages: Not as Romantic as I expected!
