...Yet again the US film industry have managed to produce a film which portrays the Americans "kicking some enemy's butt". This time it is the British. As usual the yanks are heroic, fair, brave and above all, patriotic while the British are portrayed as cowardly and cruel to a man. While the movie is well acted and photographed, it does not make up for the bending of the truth which seems to go on for most of the movie. I know it is probably not meant to be a historical documentary, but it would be nice if the screenwriters, director et al would not be so blatantly one-sided. For me this sabre-rattling entirely spoiled the movie. Not the blockbuster of the summer, that was Gladiator....

Advantages: great film, based on a true story, low flying sequences Disadvantages: some special effects
...an interesting peek (despite its historical inaccuracies) into a mind almost obsessed on developing a weapon that will stop the German war machine in its tracks and saving allied lives. Redgrave himself is fantastic as Wallis. Playing an often meek, mild mannered scientist who has a streak of tenaciousness that is as thick as the walls of the Dams he is trying to destroy. His work and dedication to developing the bomb show a man whose commitment is bordering on the obsessive.
Once Wallis's plan gain a little favour amongst the wartime top brass Commander Guy Gibson (Richard Todd) is brought in the create and train a new squadron. This squadron is made up of some of the best crews available, and they are quickly thrown into training for the low level night raid that is coming up. These are the men of 617 squadron, The Dam Busters as they became known...

...Gladiator, the latest historical epic takes place between the years when the Roman empire grew strong and then over time subsided. Though the story is largely fictional, Gladiator uses actual historical figures and tells its story in the context of the events of the day. This is the kind of film is that which makes 'Blockbusters', it is packed with action and good special affects. The story is in depth and look on a modern Roman empire where the vicious death matches loved by the public and organised by the dictator rule....
