I work out quite a lot but tend to get bored quite easily by the bog standard repetitive moves you normally find in workout videos/dvds. I tried Tae-Bo for a while but found that a bit too strenuous for me so then thought 'Why does keeping fit have to be so hard?'
I spotted this dvd in my local Tesco priced at £10.99 and thought hmmm, all these dancers seem to be well toned and a bit of instruction in the dance department wouldn't go amiss as well!
So what is this dvd actually about?
Well as you have probably guessed from my ramblings so far, this is a workout session designed around hip hop dance moves.
This is apparently the sencond outing for Tony Stone and his group of dancers, who take you through a series of dance moves designed to give you a good workout while actually having fun!
I have absolutely no coordination whatsoever so was a little dubious about how well I would do at this but I thought I would give it a try anyway.
THE WARM UP:
This is a 10 minute section designed to warm up the body, as you always should before beginning a workout of any kind. Already Stone takes you into some basic dance moves by providing a twist on some of the standard warm up stretches and preparing you for what is to come.
THE WORKOUT:
The workout itself is divided into 3 sections, with 2 different moves in each section, with each move repeated on either side (ie if you start the 1st move moving to your left you then alternate it to your right), all performed to a great hip hop soundtrack.
Some of the moves may seem a little complicated at 1st, especially as the dancers don't move very slowly, however they do repeat each move 4 times before moving onto the next. After the 2nd move has been completed, they then take you back to the beginning and combine the 2. Then when the 3rd is completed they combine moves 2 & 3, then go back and combine 1, 2 & 3 and so on, so you really get to see what is going on and how they all fit together.
After each section has been completed and run through a few times, you move on to the next section.
THE PERFORMANCE:
The idea is, that after the 3 sections have been completed, you put them together into a complete dance routine. This is a little faster than the learning sections so you may need to run through this a few times to get it right, but I suppose that is the idea as you then get more of a workout.
THE COOL DOWN:
As with the warm up, you should always cool down after a work out to stop your muscles seizing up. I tried this without the cool down and believe me you feel it the next day!
MY OPINION:
This is a great workout! It really brings you out in a sweat but unlike conventional workouts, you don't feel the strain on your muscles. I have found that with aerobics, with all the repetitions my legs and arms start really aching halfway through so I can't put as much effort in which obviously takes the benefit away from the workout. With this, it does make you out of breath but nothing hurts! It doesn't feel like you have even really done any excercise which is definitely my kind of workout!
The only bad thing I would say about this is that once you have all the moves down pat you may not really want to go through the endless repetitions of each move, although this is what actually provides you with the workout. I suppose in that case though you will just have to purchase the next in the series (if there is one) and learn that too!
