If you’re into girls, hip-hop and music videos in general, or from an academic perspective the rise of raunch culture (it epitomises raunch feminism), then this is a surprisingly classy DVD that is worth buying if you can get it cheap. (The rrp is £19.95 but I picked it up from an independent record store for £4.99)
--------Format--------
The rapper ‘Redman’ from the Wu Tang Clan hosts ‘Hip Hop Honeys Las Vegas.’ Over one weekend at the Adult Video Network Awards in Las Vegas he walks round with a microphone, camera crew and an entourage of scantily clad ‘honeys.’ Short segments between 0:30 and 1:30 of Redman and various other rappers overindulging in drugs, booze and women, whilst talking gibberish to the camera, alternate with longer clips of the indivdial hip hop honeys stripping very sensually at various settings. The short clips include lots of LA party girls in hot pants showing off their curves to the camera . The DVD lasts one hour and 3 minutes, which is good because I got bored after 40 minutes. --------Girls--------
The major pulling point of the DVD is the girls. At the start Redman says: “We’re promoting no sex. It’s just about women that look beautiful in their bodies.” And all of the girls are very pretty indeed. Most are of black or Asian origin, with surgically enhanced breasts and lots of experience in rap videos or the adult entertainment industry. On the DVD they don’t actually dance, just sort of roll around teasing and touching themselves in a ‘soft core’ manor. This takes place at several private locations: sofas; bedrooms; deserts; swimming pools; bathrooms; cars; and pooltables. Each section cuts back and forth between the girls stripping in different places, for example Aria Giovanni uses two different couches, and a private room. For more variety there are short interviews with some of the girls. It’s fairly trivial such as their favourite body part, or which type of guys they like, but I think it is good to show that they have personalities. In order of appearance (incase you want to google them) the girls are: Amber Easton; Jayde Steele; Aria Giovanni (my favourite); Canaila Jordan; Mercedes; Tamia; Kitty; Dragon Lilly; Shawna; Nicole Cat; Francine Dee; Tina Tran; Chaslyn; Evelyn NG; Gia La Shay; Jasmyne; Tai Lavay; Sharee English; Sharonda; and Crystal Carmichael.
--------Music--------
This is the second hook that the DVD has. During each honey’s section there is a backdrop of hip-hop beats provided by different DJs and producers. These tend to be the slow, chilled out kind of instrumentals that commercial rappers such as Nelly, fifty cent or Akon use in their commercial rap songs. For me having the beats without the vocals is really refreshing. They are underproduced which makes them very relaxing to listen to in the background. A few famous rappers also make brief appearances to address the viewer. These include: 50 Cent; Lil’ John; DJ Premier; Obie Trice; Mark Ronson; Stretch Armstrong; and John Singleton. We mustn’t forget Redman, who does a great job as presenter. During a visit to a Las Vegas radio station you see him freestyle rapping on air. There is a longer two minute clip of this during the outtakes which shows that he has a lot of talent.
--------Technical--------
The footage of the women is filmed and edited to a high standard which makes the DVD feel organised and professional. They use several techniques commonly found in rap videos: -There are lots slow hand held shots moving up and down peoples’ bodies. - There is a lot of slow zoom in/zoom out used. - Shots often cut right on beat which makes for a very good screen rhythm, especially when there are three cuts per a 4/4 beat. -The colours used very rich and bright, almost lurid. - Lots of soft focus effects are added later in the edit suite.
For people interested in TV production or music video production it could be enjoyable to watch this.
--------Criticisms--------
-The first girl on the DVD, Amber Easton, is on screen for over four minutes, but as the DVD progresses less time and detail are given to the honeys’ sections. By 40 minutes ‘Cat’ is only on screen in one location for 2 minutes. If this were a track on a music album it would be called filler.
-Several locations, such as the waterfall/swimming pool are re-used.
-Although Redman is funny, the short segments of him and other rappers speaking lacks direction. Perhaps if they had a common theme or purpose it would hold peoples’ attention better.
--------Conclusion--------
I really enjoyed watching the DVD. The women in it are classy, and very sexy. The professional editing, music and host of famous rappers also gives it a more respectable edge than your traditional top-shelf smut. I want to buy some of the other Hip Hop Honeys DVD series and watch them, but definitely not with my parents after Sunday lunch.
